The salmon was scarce

We are basically heading out of town but the town we are walking out of is San Sebastian de los Reyes.

San Seb was founded in 1492 after 32 people fled Alcobendas and their feudal lord, Juan Arias de Avila.  They settled in huts on land owned by the Council of Madrid. The place was put under royal protection, hence ‘de los Reyes.’  Even Spanish wiki has little to say till the 19th century.  During the Napoleonic Wars a company of French Infantry were stationed here and the locals had to provide wheat, barley, straw, wine, legumes, oil, meat, coal, and firewood—and leave at the Frenchmen’s service eighty-one mules and thirty-five donkeys 

Our favourite GSH Dictionary reported ‘: a town with a town hall in the province and territorial court of Madrid (3 leagues).   Situated on the southern slope of a small hill; it is exposed to north and northwest winds; the climate is cold, and its most common illnesses are intermittent. It has 250 houses ; the town hall; a jail; a primary school for boys, endowed with 1,825 reales; another for girls, whose teacher receives 500 reales; a parish church (Saint Sebastian the Martyr) with a second-class curacy, under the patronage of the State; a hermitage under the patronage of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, belonging to the town, and the cemetery in a place that does not offend public health: the residents. They obtain their water from the six springs scattered throughout the district.   The Jarama River flows through it . The soil is clayey and of poor quality. Roads : those leading to neighboring towns, and the Madrid-France highway which passes close to the town. Mail is received in Alcovendas by a designated mail carrier. Products : wheat, rye, barley, and wine; it supports sheep, cattle, and mules; it raises game such as partridges and hares, and has fairly good small-scale fishing in the Jarama River . Industry : agriculture. Population., 1,287.

You may have guessed the next bit. Population in 1960 - 2760. Ten years later - 15497.  Today, over 90,000.

We are tripping along the Paseo de Europa - with varying dull blocks and modern shops.  We will pass the Metro Station Hospital Infanta Sofia. We are ending at the Hacienda Campoamor.  It is a 3.7 star wedding venue.  Mindel said this, four months ago. ‘Villa Laureana (formerly Hacienda de Campoamor) is nothing like it used to be. We celebrated more than five family events at the old Hacienda Campoamor and it was fine, but now the service is slow, disorganized, and unprofessional (they serve from all sides, the cutlery is piled up on one side of the plate, etc.). The price per person is between €50 and €55, which is just average. The table layout in the dining room is terrible; they're round tables crammed together, giving you the feeling of being at a wedding (there were many different families there celebrating Mother's Day). The salmon was scarce and poorly cooked because it was clearly defrosted. The oxtail, while certainly not from a bull, was frozen (you could see the saw marks) and it looked like it had been cooked and refrigerated to be heated and ready for whoever ordered it. Was it pre-packaged? I wouldn't be surprised. I'm removing this restaurant from my list of favorites. I'm not coming back. ‘
