In the land of the eventual Carnival
We are going down today unto the very depths of….. Sarria. We haven’t done a decent town for a while so it is time to get urban. We are heading towards where 13000 people call home. Being relatively flat must have been attraction but it was the pilgrim trade that really brought people in. The town has twenty Romanesque churches and monasteries to add extra tone to the place. In the 19th century the Lugo-Valdeorras road [1850] and railway [1880] helped with the export of livestock, cereals, chestnuts, potatoes, hams and sausages. Unlike many places, Sarria didn’t have a huge population collapse in the 197-s. A gentle dip from a high of 15000 to 12000 has been followed by a slight recovery. We are in luck.
