Leo was born in Tenerife in 1809.  He was a supporter of the Liberals and the faction of Maria Christina, sometime Queen and later regent. When General Baldomero Espartero seized power he went into exile with Her Maj. When she came back into power he got his reward, Captain General of Cuba. Was his liberality a modern one. Nope! He was responsible for a repression that involved massacring people and imprisoning and torturing several thousand enslaved and free people in an event known as The Year of the Lash. 



In 1854 O’Donnell launched a cup and became Prime Minister for a short period. He then served as War Minister and then was PM from 1858 to 1866 [with a brief gap between 1863-5.]  He died in 1867.

  We are pottering along at 91m but will be a mere two by the day’s end.   We are heading for San Vicente de la Barquera. It is one of those places, on a hostile coast, which provided a safer shelter.  As a consequence it got a castle. The place did the usual having Bronze Age chaps loafing about. The Romans made a small port.  It really got going when Alfonso I sent peoples to populate it in the 8th century. The castle was built, the town followed.  Things really got going in 1210 when Alfonso VIII gave the place a charter.  It got the same privileges as San Sebastian. It's a shame the hooligans and the weather ruined some of the views

  We are going back to the street and on to the Avenida Salvador Allende.  Squeezed between us and the beach are houses of various shapes and sizes and intentions of construction. Some are tourist apartments like the Casa Tia Antonia.  It gets 4.9 stars from 175 reviews.  It’s LGBTQ+ friendly.
