Mummies, markets and maybe some defences

Image
Mostly we are going along the Calle San Francisco, which is a one car wide sort of a place, packed with people and places which we won’t go into.  We are heading for the Museum of Nature and Archaeology.  I have been thinking about this.  We have a limited time. Should I be going to things which are unique to Santa Cruz or should I go to museums which, will in part, tell bigger stories which are not just Canarian.  The blurb on the Google link says ‘Museum tracing islands' natural history, with mummies & artifacts from the native Guanche culture.’  So, I think we are ok.  https://www.museosdetenerife.org/muna-museo-de-naturaleza-y-arqueologia/museo/museo-arqueologico/ They have mummies.  Are these the sort that come alive in museums? I will need to consider this as presently I am hunting them in Kenilworth Castle.  https://www.english-heritage.org.uk/visit/whats-on/kenilworth-castle-halloween-half-term-24-31-oct-2025/    Four...

Still beautiful in the end of October

Image
We are going into the Parque Garcia Sanabria. It is one of those well pathed and treed sorts of a place, with shade and benches.  Jake does a good job summing it up ‘What a lovely park. Everywhere you turn there is something beautiful in front of you. There's plenty of cacti, trees and other flowers to look at. There's structures and statues, fountains and arches, there's also cafes at either ends as well as toilets. If you look carefully enough you'll spot parakeets and frogs in the pond too. Definitely worth checking it out if you visit the city!’ One of the highlights is the floral clock.  I’m not sure what you can add to ‘it’s a clock’ and ‘it has flowers.’ Edy does his best. ‘Beautiful park with variety of plants trees and flowers. Still beautiful in the end of October. We really enjoyed our walk.’ In to the typical streets and past Etereo by Pedro Nel.  2185 reviews. 4.8 stars.  Two weeks ago Natalia said ‘Visiting this restaurant was a great choice. We ...

The vibe was great, people got emotional (of course) and there is plenty of sun

We are heading down another 100m and through several venues of dreams and illusions. First we shall go to the Estadio Helidiri Rodriquez Lopez, home of Club Deportivo Tenerife.  https://www.clubdeportivotenerife.es/entradas   The stadium is an almost 23,000 proper in  a city affair. They are currently in the third tier of Spanish football, having been relegated last season. As recent as 2009 they were, briefly, in the top tier.  I think Laurin sums it up nicely ‘ If you are in town, pop by for a game; don’t expect world class football but take it as an enjoyable casual experience. We got tickets through the clubs website for the San Sebastián sector, where many local fans sat. Within the sector, you can sit wherever you want and you will always be close to the field. You can not enter other sectors. The vibe was great, people got emotional (of course) and there is plenty of sun. In the upper part it can get quite windy. Tickets usually cost between 15-40 Eur, ...

Let us move on and down - well, 250m down in a pleasant stroll along the less busy streets.   So, here we are, wandering down amid the heart of the Canary Islands so let's get pre-1400. The Greeks and Phoenicians visited the islands and the Romans knew of them.  Various theories have been put  out forwards but it is generally accepted that the earliest settlers arrived around 1000BC and then others turned up un the Phoenician era, running up to 600BC.  Apparently a Roman client King Juba II, sent a expedition to the isles.  Subsequently Roman amphorae and the like have been found on the Iles.  From the 14th century onward, sailors from Mallorca, Portugal and Genoa made numerous visits. The Majorcans established a mission with a bishop that lasted from 1350 to 1400. We haven’t visited a butchers for a while so here is La Estella, a butchers with 16 reviews and 4.6 stars.  It is open 8 till 2.15 every day but Monday, when its closed and Sunda...

A lack of atmosphere and a little more sausages

We are taking a gentle stroll to towards the sea.  Much of the day will be in a wide boulevard with a tram in the middle of it. I feel we can almost feel the sea breeze, the warmth of the autumn sun and all is right with the world. Let’s do breakfast. Meshupo is a tapas bar that opens at 7.30am [8am weekends] and closes at 10pm. It is LGBTQ+ friendly and gets 41 stars.  The top four review references as bocadillos, pintxos, environment and morning.  Alejandro was all one-starry. ‘I waited over 20 minutes for service, while four or five people who arrived after me took their orders. The service was terrible, especially from a blonde woman with her hair tied back. I ordered an orange juice, and it was lukewarm; when I asked the waiter for ice, he simply ignored me. Overall, customer service was terrible and I don't recommend it.’   Marcos offered an opposite view ‘The service is exceptional. I go there often, and the service is unbeatable. They have a wide varie...
