The town of the splendid butcher

The current castle is very intact and 14th century - with 15th century renovations. It was built on the site of a 12th century affair.  To be fair, it has not been all joy. During the 1520 Revolt of the Comuneros it was burnt down by Royalist troops.



It is not, generally speaking, an easy place to visit. Weekdays you can get in from 1pm to 2pm. At weekends it throws the gates wide between 9am and 1pm.



A month ago Marta said ‘We loved the tour; they shared very interesting details, and the guide (whose name I can't remember, was it Luis?) was very friendly. It's great that they make the tour enjoyable; that's essential for a good experience. We booked a week in advance by phone, which I highly recommend. ‘




Orgaz is one of those places which has profoundly crowded old streets which are really easy to fall out of and into a scattered countryside. The Ermita de la Concepción. Is a well renovated place in the middle of the town. Rosa felt it was a ‘Very charming, small but open. And there it was, protected by a grille... guarding the reliquary of the recumbent Christ that is carried in procession. One of the few I've been able to see on a Sunday, it's very close to the castle. ‘  The place dates back to the 16th century. 




Time for a snack. Trady’s Supermarket is a 3.6 starred place according to its nine reviews.   People love the butcher.  Oscar said ‘Some items can cost two or three times as much as in other supermarkets. The best thing is the butcher shop; good prices and good quality.’  Jose also felt ‘The butcher shop is fine. The other place, which is owned by someone else, is rude... Everything is up to three times more expensive than in any supermarket.’





Time to get some new togs - I mean, we are still wearing what we wore when we set out on this venture.  Garcia Trend is fairly five stars. https://www.garciatrend.com/   A month ago Tamara reckoned ‘Wonderful find!! While looking for dress options different from the typical stores, I stumbled upon this charming brand. The owner is lovely, her clothes are unique and beautiful, and the shipping was super fast.’

  We are pottering along at 91m but will be a mere two by the day’s end.   We are heading for San Vicente de la Barquera. It is one of those places, on a hostile coast, which provided a safer shelter.  As a consequence it got a castle. The place did the usual having Bronze Age chaps loafing about. The Romans made a small port.  It really got going when Alfonso I sent peoples to populate it in the 8th century. The castle was built, the town followed.  Things really got going in 1210 when Alfonso VIII gave the place a charter.  It got the same privileges as San Sebastian. Life in the Socialist Citadel

  We are wandering a bit around tracks that are not in the ken of streetview. El Burgo Ranero is one of those places with newly kempt squares and tidy houses next to wastes and scrubs. It always struck me with Spain they had so much land they could afford to be a little cavalier with its use. The tidying up has started but is never in control. El Burgo Ranero has 841 or 647 inhabitants [depends on which nations wiki pages you go on, a flag which announces it is on the camino and a website.  https://www.aytoelburgoranero.es/  It is under the thrall of the PSOE. I must admit, as a humble Deputy Chair of a Parish Council I really like the fact their town council has a Mayor-President, a 1st Deputy Mayor, a second Deputy Mayor and a single ‘Councillor’ from the the PSOE. The Frontier is marked

  It is Twelfth Night but who needs to know this. Tomorrow is the key day for us i Spain.  Let us head one towards the Murcian border.  The road is a bit similar. It does feel like a 70s cartoon, where Scooby runs down a corridor which is eerily the same. We will pass the Univeridad Miguel Hernandez.  A week ago Valor wrote ‘ It's okay, a bit old-fashioned but a good place to study for a degree’.  Time to move on. What every University needs is an expresso bar.  Planta Baja fulfils that need. Fernando felt ‘A very cozy place with very friendly staff. If you like darts, this is the place for you. Great coffee and great cocktails. 100% recommended.’ and why not. Well, we have been building up to Murcia for sometime and now we are here.  To be honest, I was expecting a sign.
