All along the mini castle traffic lights

 We are walking out of town. It will take some time.  First we will go to the Torre de la Malmuerta.


You know a city has a bit of class when it has a bit of wall or tower hidden behind a row of mundane sort of housing.  What then of one that is out and proud. The Torre de la Malmuerta - a tower and an arch of intactness. Csaba Biro tells us  ‘Torre de la Malmuerta is a gate tower of the Axerquia wall in Córdoba, Andalusia, Spain. This Albarrana tower was built in: 1406–1408, by order of King Henry III of Castile, over a pre existing Almohad structure, to defend the gates of Rincón and Colodro. Later it was also used as a prison for nobles. ‘




Ben is less historic in his view. ‘Nice mini castle like structure next to some traffic lights. Oddly out of place, but brings some culture and charm to an area otherwise devoid of any. ‘




We are passing a Japanese Head Spa. I have never been to a Japanese Head Spa so let us pop in. This is clearly the pampering corner. Definitely a great choice. ‘



All this health isn’t good for body. McDonald’s in the Avienda de Libia only gets 3.7.  You would wonder how McDonald’s survive with average ratings less than average 4. I feel research in to Google Reviewers is required. I mean, are Macky-Ds reviewers more inclined to misery? If you have spent a lot on a massage are you less likely to bad-review it?  I feel Five stars are a little blunt as a way of rating the efforts of an edifice and its workers. Some sort of qualification as to the mood of the reviewer is required. May I suggest:


A knee-jerk 1

An unthinking 5

A thoughtful - 3



I await this scheme to gain the widespread acclaim I feel it deserves.



We are on the N-IV.  It is the Madrid to Cadiz road that heads south from the capital to Bailen and then west to Cordoba and beyond. It is 645km long 


So the day ends and the countryside awaits.

  We are pottering along at 91m but will be a mere two by the day’s end.   We are heading for San Vicente de la Barquera. It is one of those places, on a hostile coast, which provided a safer shelter.  As a consequence it got a castle. The place did the usual having Bronze Age chaps loafing about. The Romans made a small port.  It really got going when Alfonso I sent peoples to populate it in the 8th century. The castle was built, the town followed.  Things really got going in 1210 when Alfonso VIII gave the place a charter.  It got the same privileges as San Sebastian. Castro Urdiales, Santander and Laredo.  Along with Laredo, it has not prospered as much.  Fate was not kind.  From the mid 15th century, fires and plagues did not help.  When Charles I visited the town a bullfight was held in his honour.  He fell it at it and had to spend the night at the Convent of San Luis.  The town has a website.  https://aytosanvicente...

Life in the Socialist Citadel

  We are wandering a bit around tracks that are not in the ken of streetview. El Burgo Ranero is one of those places with newly kempt squares and tidy houses next to wastes and scrubs. It always struck me with Spain they had so much land they could afford to be a little cavalier with its use. The tidying up has started but is never in control. El Burgo Ranero has 841 or 647 inhabitants [depends on which nations wiki pages you go on, a flag which announces it is on the camino and a website.  https://www.aytoelburgoranero.es/  It is under the thrall of the PSOE. I must admit, as a humble Deputy Chair of a Parish Council I really like the fact their town council has a Mayor-President, a 1st Deputy Mayor, a second Deputy Mayor and a single ‘Councillor’ from the the PSOE. They also have two Popular Party councillors and one from the UPL. We start near the train station. Roman Ruins and a decaf espresso

A straight road, a clear sky and the prospect of the a bit of a Roman Road to the east of the road. The remains are remainant.   https://www.institutoleonesdecultura.es/antigua-ciudad-astur-romana-de-lancia/   Lancia was the largest city in this part for the Roman world. It covered 30 hectares Pliny the Elder mentioned it. The place was conquered by Publius Charisius in 25BC. He didn’t burn it but occupied the place. We end the day in Vil lamoros de Massilia. About 90 people live here. La Casina offers a few diverting meals.   https://bar-la-casina.negocio.site/   In November Eric Callman gave it five stars and said Perfect little cafe/bar on the Camino! They have decaf espresso, and a nice selection of teas. That is enough for today.
