My Carmona
We are off to Carmona and why not. It has History, rather a lot of it and is just another of those Spanish towns with a past that you have never heard of but rather feel you should have.
History wise Carmona has the usual Paleolithics, Neolithics and all that crowd/ The Phoenicians arrived and replaced the circular huts with rectangular ones. The name Carmona comes from the Semitic root words Kar [city] and Hammon [a sun-god]. So, welcome to the city of Hammon. The Romans came, hung around and from the end of the 3rd century started to go away - well, the urban centre went into decline. Very briefly it was part of the Byzantine Empire and then became one of the first capitals of Muslim Spain. Castilian expansion came to Carmona in 1247, when Rodrigo Gonzalez Giron, Steward to Ferdinand III, accepted the surrender of the town.
We are going to head into town. The Teatro Cerezo is just a step or two of our path so let us sidle up and look at it. It as constructed in the early 1930s https://turismo.carmona.org/teatro-cerezo/ Isabel enjoyed the place six days ago. ‘The theater's interior is wonderful; it's beautiful, well-maintained, and clean. What I love most is that there's a youth cultural association. It's great to see young people organizing events and doing such a fantastic job! 😊 ‘
Into the heart of the town is the Alcazar de la Puerta de Sevilla. https://en.andalucia.org/listing/alc%C3%A1zar-de-la-puerta-de-sevilla/15730101/ While it has been built on the ruins of the Romans, Carthaginians and the like, most of it is 14th & 15th century. It was much restored in the mid 1970s. Reviews average out at 4.7 stars. Two days ago Juan said ‘It's not badly preserved, it's interesting in its style, and it has spectacular views. For retirees, it's €1 per person.’
Heading out of town, the Meson La Cueva offers us respite. It is one of those whitewashed rubbly walls. 1588 people give it 4.3 stars. Two days Carlos said ‘When you get there, it's even more than you expect. We all loved it. The service was incredibly friendly, and the food was fantastic. The portions were generous. It's more about quality than price, as you can eat very well at a super affordable price. ‘
Up the Calle Gonzalez Giron we will pass the Tienda Salome. Now, Google calls it a Convenience store so the Salome seems to be more than it can deliver. It has no reviews. I feel bereft.
So we go north and so we head into the wide sun burnt future,
