Embracing the Underground

 We are skimming the edge of Seville as we plod east, north-east and then turn north-east into the country.  We will be very near to San Jeronimo station - which only gets 3.7 stars, a bit typical of public institutions  Alejandro clearly liked this as a not in town parking site and its lacks he notes. ‘Despite being the best connection to La Cartuja stadium during Real Betis matches, the parking lot has been filled with valet parking, even though it's a public parking lot at the station. We are not really passing much today so we have time to think about the Seville Metro. They have 18 kilometres of track, currently over two lines, with a third hoped for in 2030.  The first planned metro was proposed in 1969.  Construction began in 1974. Are you having a laugh?’  This applied when the monument to San Fernando in Plaza Nueva sank and a sinkhole appeared in Puerta Jerez.  Things came to a halt.





In 2003 the works began again and Line 1 finally opened in April 2009.  The 2008 Financial Crisis held back the expansion.  Currently Line is in operation, Line 2 is projected, Line 3 is under construction and Line 4 is in the planning stage.  Line 2-4 would add 49.3km to the network.




Back to the road.  The Salon de Celebraciones Albahaca looks to be a large space wherein you can eat.  24 reviews deliver 3.5 stars.  The most recent review is two years old.   We are pottering along at 91m but will be a mere two by the day’s end.   We are heading for San Vicente de la Barquera. It is one of those places, on a hostile coast, which provided a safer shelter.  As a consequence it got a castle. The place did the usual having Bronze Age chaps loafing about. The Romans made a small port.  It really got going when Alfonso I sent peoples to populate it in the 8th century. The castle was built, the town followed.  Things really got going in 1210 when Alfonso VIII gave the place a charter.  It got the same privileges as San Sebastian.   It is Twelfth Night but who needs to know this. Tomorrow is the key day for us i Spain.  Let us head one towards the Murcian border.  The road is a bit similar. It does feel like a 70s cartoon, where Scooby runs down a corridor which is eerily the same. We will pass the Univeridad Miguel Hernandez.  A week ago Valor wrote ‘ It's okay, a bit old-fashioned but a good place to study for a degree’.  Time to move on. What every University needs is an expresso bar.  Planta Baja fulfils that need. Fernando felt ‘A very cozy place with very friendly staff. If you like darts, this is the place for you. It's a shame the hooligans and the weather ruined some of the views
