In the land of the tee and the unnatural green
We are in the golf, in not the gulf, today - in fact we are in the Urbanizacion Alhambra del Golf, which is near the Urbanizacion Biarritz Golf and the Urbanizacion Atalaya del Golf. You may detect a theme. Let us run with it, or at least amble.
Golf seems to arrived in Spain in the late nineteenth century, probably, like football brought by British workers and visitors. The Real Club de Golf de Las Palmas, founded in 1891,is reckoned to be the oldest club in the country. From that point on courses appeared in Cantabria, Madrid and the Costa del Sol.
In 1921 the Open de Espana was held for the first time in Las Palmas. In 19054 a second club, in Madrid, was opened. By that time five other clubs had been developed in the Canary Islands, Huelva, La Puerta de Hierro, San Sebastian and Neguri. The winner of the tournament was Frenchman Arnaud Massy. M. Massy is the only Frenchmen only to have won any four of the men’s major championships. He married Janet Henderson [of North Berwick] and lived in Scotland in the 20s and 30s. He died, in poverty, in Normandy in 1950.
Golf Clubs came to Andalusia in 1925 - with the Club de Campo de Malaga. Today 92 courses can be found in the province. Catalonia and Castile y Leon have 40, Valencia 36, Madrid 33 and the Canaries 23.
We will skirt the edge of El Parasiso Golf Club but I could not resist it. https://elparaisogolf.com/ A week ago T Duerrmeyer declared ‘Wonderful, walkable 18-hole golf course. The fairways are lush and wide. The setting is gorgeous. Lock boxes are provided in the buggies, a very nice feature. Great and welcoming terrace restaurant that is open all day. Food is excellent. Member owned but open to green fee players. El Paraiso is a premier golf destination on the Costa del Sol.’
Two weeks ago Henriette was a bit three-star. ‘We played golf here two days ago and were very disappointed with the value for money. Yes, there was a lot of rain, which we understand. However, driving on the fairways was prohibited (although this is permitted in the immediate vicinity), and three holes, which would certainly have been the most beautiful from the tee, could only be played as par 3s from a distance of 120 meters. In addition, there was no way to clean the balls at any of the tee boxes because they were dry. Given all these restrictions, we would have appreciated a temporary discount. Therefore, we certainly won't be playing here again in the near future. On a very positive note, and hence the three stars, the friendliness of the staff, the pro shop, and the marshal was outstanding. They were all very, very nice and helpful. A definite thumbs up.’
We’ll end at a Burger King. 2000+ reports and 3.8 stars. The top words are burger, cleanliness, potatoes, terrace and whooper. The also mention:
Onion rings - a year ago Paqui wrote ‘At the Burger King in Cancelada, Estepona. The David Muñoz burger was awful, it tasted like typical Burger King, bland. The air conditioning wasn't working because they didn't have enough contracted power and the kitchen kept shutting off. The onion rings were soggy and limp. Overall, it looked like they'd wiped the tables with a dirty rag. I've never had worse food.’
Crown for kids - Two months ago Yesica opined ‘They were so kind to the little ones; they put crowns on them as soon as we walked in. Excellent service and very friendly. Chari served us; she's a delight. We'll be back.’
Long chicken - one year and five stars led David to declare ‘Best KFC I have ever been to...
So we end.
