In the land of good views and poor cheese
Once more into Spain. What would have happened if the War of the Spanish Succession happened? Would La Linea be grander or less important? Would Gibraltar be a rock with a few batteries on it and that’s all. Who can say. Meanwhile let us plod on to Cruz Herrera Museum.
The museum opens 10am - 2pm every day but Monday. It also opens 5-8pm Tuesday to Friday. It has a Facebook Page. https://www.facebook.com/NuevoMuseoCruzHerrera It was last updated today - which is rare amongst these things. The top review words are bugs, muy interesante and painter.
Bugs - Jose Manuel said ‘The Cruz Herrera Museum is very beautiful; for each holiday or season they display something from that time. Currently, there's an exhibition of taxidermied insects and bugs, as well as exhibitions of paintings and clothing. Overall, it's very nice, and admission is completely free.’
Muy interesante - Angle opined ‘A small, two-story museum, but it's interesting to see the collection of the famous local painter. The collection of butterflies, insects, and crustaceans is also very interesting. It doesn't take long to visit.’
Painter - Curro wrote ‘Stunning exhibition of the fantastic painter Cruz Herrera. Very well organized, the painter's works are of the highest quality, all in all a wonderful experience.’
Along the sea front and past the Gibraltar Views Guest House. Now, before clicking I have to say if this isn’t something out of Bridlington in the 60s, with a startling faded carpet, Scottish landscape prints and shared facilities. According to Booking.com a twin bed will set you back £56 tonight. Ok, cheese is the joint 4th highest review term. I investigated. A year ago Tim gave three stars. ‘Good view - but very far away from Gibraltar, further than you think! Along with border crossing, expect >1hr to get into Gibraltar on foot.
Breakfast was BAD. Out of date yoghurts (see photo - I stayed 6th-8th March) mouldy orange on the side, very basic bread and poor quality cheese, expected to wash everything up.
Workmen started banging and crashing at 8:30am, warning sign placed on the balcony with the view. The room was pleasant but very small. Worth a stay if cheap, maybe skip the breakfast. Never once saw Jose or had any kind of greeting - entirely self service in and out.’
Ivonne was more positive. ‘We arrived by chance… we had booked a room at the Marriott, but the air conditioning wasn't working, so we called and they told us they had a room available. We sent all our details and in 10 minutes we were able to access the room. The house is superbly located with a balcony off the living room and a kitchen with views of Gibraltar. Very clean and with fruit, coffee, bread, ham, cheese, and other things for breakfast.’
We’ll end near Bar de Ana’s. Pi Wi likes the place. ‘I went in for breakfast and found a very welcoming atmosphere. It was nice and warm inside these cold days. The service was excellent and the coffee and toast were delicious. I went back the next day and I'll definitely be back!’
So the day ends.
