Go ask Alice
It is another day of wiggling around the merry hamlets of the south. I did promise you rabbit holes and, where we have rabbit holes we need lepridae.
There are rabbits and, unlike those in England, they needed no Normans to bring them in and build them rather natty warrens as their little paws couldn’t dig their own. Apparently these chaps probably involved in South-East Iberia in the Middle Pleistocene [between 129,000 to 774,100 years ago - the Middle Pleistocene, not the rabbits.] .
Rabbits are important, mostly as prey. Tough but them’s the breaks. Apparently the Iberian lynx and Iberian imperial eagle really like bunnies. They are also dispersers of seed. They are keen on dry pastures, which seem to be a good thing. They seem to range up to 300m from home, giving them a territory of 2.5 hectares. Apparently 12 years is a good innings for the rabbit-kind.
A survey of the bunnies was done in 2025, which revealed a drop in numbers by 60% since 2012 across the forested and mountainous regions of Iberia. To quote ‘In Spain News’ ‘The most severe decline has occurred in habitats once rich in vegetation variety, such as mosaic landscapes. These include combinations of farmland, scrubland, open grass, and forest edges—areas that previously supported high rabbit densities. But monoculture farming, rural depopulation, and urban development are rapidly replacing these diverse ecosystems. As these habitats vanish, wild rabbits are left with fewer places to feed and hide from predators.’ In the lowland agricultural regions things are stable, especially in the areas of cereals and regular irrigation.
Apparently 300 rangers are using an app to gather up to date data.
We will be passing La Scala, Marbella, an Italian restaurant of 4.5 stars in nature and 792 reviews. http://www.lascalamarbella.com/ To review word is ‘sunday lunch.’ Yum Fizz proclaimed ‘A wonderful Easter Sunday lunch with a great singer (Melissa Carver), delicious traditional roast, free flow prosecco and super friendly service. All in comfortable and stylish surroundings. Age range was fairly mature so perhaps not suitable for those looking for a big party, but was perfect for the occasion. Prices are not cheap but you pay for the quality. The lamb shank was absolutely sublime!’
Over the A7 Carretera de Cadiz is Mini Indian. It is a 4.7 star 1160 reviewed sort of a place. Music is the top word so here we go. MK said ‘I stumbled upon this restaurant and I was so happy I found it. Truly amazing restaurant, the staff are extremely professional and the food is authentic and made from scratch. They also have Bollywood nights and live music. I would absolutely recommend!!’
