We're on the road to nowhere and beyond!
Of we go, along the road less travelled. Well, Google was up here in 2009. The reason for that is that the road disappears, swallowed up by the new A-92, so, we will have to head along tracks to make progress.
We are going to be near a hill top castle. The Castillo de Pena aka the fortress of Diezma was built in the 11th century by the monarchs of Granada. It is a small place, on top of some rocks, guarding the border. When the Caliphate of Cordoba fell apart the local region sided with Almeria - our castle stayed loyal to Granada. https://rinconesdegranada.com/castillo-de-cabrera
Well, that’s that. We are heading to the city of Granada and so, we are in the province as well, so lets talk provincial. 940,000 live here, making it Spain’s 17th largest. Time for a rabbit hole. There are 52 provinces. The big ones are Madrid [7.1 million], Barcelona [5.9 million], Valencia [2.7], Alicante [2], Seville [1.9] and Malaga [1.7]. The middle rankers are Murcia [1.5] to Granada [0.9]. Half of them are below 600,000 people.
Back to Granada. 11.6% are foreign born, including 22000 Moroccans, 8000 Colombians and 600 Brits. According to wiki Puleva is a major employer. I quote - well, take wholescale
‘Puleva: founded in Granada in 1910, the company has been a subsidiary of the Lactalis group since 2001. It produces a wide range of dairy products, including milk and milkshakes, cream and products for infants. Puleva Biotech S.A. developed the first infant formula to contain nucleotides, and was a pioneer in the use of Omega-3 fatty acids in infant food products.’
Have we any more space to fill? I expect so. This may be a series which will run and run. Let's look at superstitions. My problem with this is that superstitions are changing and local and once pinned down in display cases they become ‘a thing’ and universal and unchanging. Anyway, lets go.
Tuesday the 13th. Unlucky. If only we had known! All those bad days. Well, Tuesday is Martes, which comes from Mars the War God and 13 is just a terrible thing, Christian wise, and so, Tuesday 13th. Don’t get married, travel or make any big decision. Maybe just stay in bed. We missed it in January and now have to wait till October to take drastic action.
Onwards and upwards tomorrow. I say that, we peaked at 1381m today - that puts us 40m above Ben Nevis.
