The road goes ever on and then we stop at a bar
Today will be mostly concerned with walking across the flat, hoping for amusement and thinking that in July - these pictures were taken in July 2025 - we may get shimmering heat haze and the hope of shade and a cold beer - other beverages are available.
It is February. It can, in Blighty, be either the grey continuation of all the dreary days, all the life drained from the world, the grass by the side of road being grey with traffic residues. Snow, especially towards the end of the month, is just a cruel reminder that Christmas was a flaccid semi-mild affair, with the reindeer dragging the sleigh through piles of leaves. Sometimes you get the snowdrops and the hope of Spring. In Murcia we may have had two days of rain and, on average, no days of snow. We came into the month with an average of 17.6oC and leave it with an average of 18.6oC. This is why the Brits are scampering around in bikinis and ill fitting shorts while the Spanish cling to fur coats and sensible footwear.
At this very moment I have made a decision. We need to spend Holy Week in Malaga. We can expect about 20oC, about one in three days will have rain. Onwards my brave pilgrims! Onwards!
After all that excitement I need a drink. We are ending the day on Calle a Estacion and just a few metres away is La Estacion, a restaurant of 4.5 stars quality. It opens at 5.30am, every day but Sunday and closes at 5pm. Rob’s three stars looks like a proper three stars of the ‘did the job’ variety. ‘Stopped for a quick bite. Sat briefly outside on the patio with the dogs. After coffee, I took the sandwich home with me. There were too many flies to stay outside. The staff was quick and helpful.’
Tono was taken. ‘It's a family business, and that alone speaks volumes. It's run by a friendly and professional couple; the service is warm and welcoming, and the food is homemade and delicious. The waitress and cook add a special touch, just like the owners. Everything is excellent, and I highly recommend it. If you're ever in the area, you'll definitely be back.’
So we drag ourselves through February.
