Amongst the great and the good

 We are heading for the municipality and town of Puerto Lumbreras.  A little over 18000 people are so keen on the place they have opted to live there. 16% of them moved from other lands for the privilege.  Wiki claims ten people who are ‘notable.’  We’ve got a few moments. Let’s look at them.  Well, we will when we have struggled through the ‘we can’t translate this’ messages.



Antonio Lopez was born in Puerto Lumbreras in 1989.  He is a footballer who signed for Valencia. He never broke into the big time but played for several teams and ended his career at Murcia.



Juan Miguel Cuenca was born in 1977.  His greatest success was winning stages in the Vuelta a La Rioja and the Tour de l’Avenir.



Gines Garcia Millan was born in 1964. He is an actor, theatre, film and television producer. He worked in his parents hotel, played football for Valladolid’s reserves and won the Actors union award for best supporting actor in TV for his part in Herederos.  ginesgarciamillan.com



Gines Garcia Peran was born in 1941 and was a professional cyclist between 1962 and 1968. A road accident caused his retirement.  He was one of the first cyclists from Murcia to enter the Tour de France and held the King of the Mountains honour for 11 consecutive days on the Tour de l’Avenir. 



Jose Martinez Olivares was born locally but died in Buenos Aires in 1986.  He is famed for poetry and essays. In 1923, as a result of the coup of Primo de Rivera, he left for Argentina.  He began to produce poetry. He was stirred by the Civil War to write ‘Ballads of Fire and Blood.’


Sonia Navarro was born in 1975.  Gaining a degree in Fine Arts from the University of Granada and a Master’s from Madrid. She works in textiles and won the 38th BMW Painting Prize for her work ‘Networks 1’. 



Jose Carlos Olivares is another footballer. He was born in 1979 and played for various lower league sides until 2013.  He has also been a coach.



Vicente Ruiz Llanmas was born in 1865.  He studied law and died in 1891.  He produced some lyric poems and several short stories, including The Mute Bird, Letters to a Friend and Women’s Nostalgia.



Pedro Antonio Sanchez was born in 1976. He was the PP president for the Murica region between 2015 and 2017.  In September 2017 he left politics to defend charges against him for malfeasance and subsidy fraud related to the construction of a theatre in Puerto Lumbreras in 2005. He was sentenced to three years in March 2023.



Augusto Vels was born in 1917.  He became a civil servant in Telegraph Company in 193, and transferred to Barcelona. In 1945 he published his first book. A Treatise on Graphology.  In 1984 he founded the Spanish Association of Consulting Graphologists. In 1996 the City Council named him a favourite son, dedicated a street, a park and a museum to him.

In 711 the full force of the Islamic tide swept from North Africa into Visigothic Spain. At the Battle of Guadalete King Roderic and much of the nobility were killed and the Iberian Peninsula collapsed before the all conquering crescent.  The thing is, Asturias is a long way from the main body of Spain.   Pina de Ebro has something for everyone who enjoys the architecture of Spanish pueblos.  It has the tiny lanes, on which houses have been rebuilt for generations without a care for the needs of the modern motorist.  We have the pathways which have been tiled over but once were dirt tracks.  We have the modern suburban developments of low rise houses and 80s hopefully aspiring shacks.  First all, however, we have a park.
