A true hive of activity and community

We have walked thousands of kilometres. We have seen many places - some of them twice when wrong turns have been taken. Few have had such a splendid entrance for such a small settlement.  A cutting, framing the way in with importuned walls.  You get a perky little chapel, all neat and whitewashed.  Then you have a gate, with not one but three entrances - none of which are useful as they are on a roundabout - but all frame a pleasing piece of geography beyond them.  According to Google it is most used from 6pm to 10pm, much more than the morning. It is least used in 3pm.  Brigitte loved it, well, the town, and virtually ascribed the following [in German] on the Puertas de Lorca ‘An astonishing amount of culture in a town of 7000 inhabitants.’

Velez-Rubio has a history, they all do, Iberians, Romans and the like - but wiki seems to skip everything between 30,000BC [arrowheads and axes] and go straight to the fall of the Moorish realms - when the Moriscos and Christians replaced the native populace.

You can’t beat a good regional museum and the Velezano Country Museum ‘Miguel Guirao’ is here to fulfil our wants, even though the webpage went down on the 2nd June 2020 due to technical problems.  Let’s be honest, Aurora sums up why this is the very quintessence of a Spanish Regional Museum.

‘If you're planning to visit this museum, make sure it's open. The opening hours listed on the website are completely inaccurate. They don't even have a sign at the entrance, and the phone number is unavailable. Luckily, we also visited Olula del Río, where we were able to see both of its museums, which are fantastic, by the way. Otherwise, after driving almost 200 km, what a waste of time!’

Jesus was happier.  Three months ago he wrote ‘A magnificent museum with a charming, friendly, and professional staff.

The museum is well worth a visit. Those gentlemen, short on resources but full of enthusiasm, began the archaeological exploration of the area.

The ethnographic section is very interesting. And you can see how these towns, then at the height of their commercial and industrial activity, were a true hive of activity and community life. Highly recommended, and our thanks to the wonderful staff who served us. Admission is €1. The best employee of the day.

The Parque del Meson has a bar, so let us nip in and look at the lake.   The Bar Lago del Meson gets 4.4 stars from 504 people. Sergio gives a no nonsense five stars  ‘The chicken wings are delicious. Value for money, it's an unbeatable bar.. ‘  Camille-Maye, on the other hands, gave two stars for ‘The worst pizza of my life’  I am impressed.  How many pizzas has she eaten?  How did she keep records to ensure this claim could be substantiated?

So, stuffed with chicken wings, but being pizza free - we will head out of town.  Crossing the motorway we will avoid the industrial estate. Let us imagine the heat and…, well, heat compared to Wales at this moment in time, and stroll pass the olives until we get to an underpass and end the day.
