The Best Musician in the world! Maybe third.


We will spend most the day walking down one of those roads with tree cover and cycle paths to guide us out of town - but first, a 2023/2008 Candlemas Bun.



Time for a bit of a diversion. Cartagena has many favoured children and Sebastian Raval is one.   He served in the Army of Flanders in Flanders, unsurprisingly, and Sicily. Raval joined the order of St. John of Jerusalem after being wounded in the siege of Maastricht.  He moved to Italy where he served as a musician in the court of Francesco Maria II della Rovere in Urbino, of the viceroy of Sicily, Bernardino de Cárdenas, and of the cardinals Peretti and Colonna in Rome.




In Rome, he declared himself the "best musician in the world", on account of which he was challenged to a musical contest first by Giovanni Maria Nanino and shortly afterwards by Francesco Soriano. Raval was defeated in both cases. On 28th April 1595 he succeeded Luis Ruiz as the last Spanish maestro di cappella of the viceroyal chapel of the Spanish viceroys in Palermo and died in 1604.


Back to the street of shaded trees. The Club Naval de Oficiales https://cdscaoficialescartagena.es/  Is open from 8am to 10.30pm weekdays and till Midnight Friday and Saturday.  It is a private members club and most of the reviews are five stars and wordless.  Three months ago Explorers Youtube - Explorers is a first name you don’t see much these days - was not happy. ‘Horrible, I don't recommend it. It turns out you can only accommodate two guests in the summer. I wonder, why do we pay every month? Am I going to take my family to eat in shifts? It's nonsensical.  Olya got to the wrote of things. ‘I really liked it. The whole area is well maintained. A lovely place to spend time with family. But only for families or friends of military personnel.’



We turn off the boulvevard and passed the Laberinto del Parque de Tentegorra. http://www.tentegorraventura.com/ It appears to have a maze.  Tapio stated ‘This place I waited to see! Friends felt a bit stressing to wonder in a maze, but I think it was made for hole family. Not too easy, just perfect. There’s extra charge for the maze, it’s easy to understand when you visit the place.’



Nika liked it.  ‘Amazing to have such a place where the kids have so much space to play. A lot of trees which give shade when the weather is hot. Fresh air always. Lots of space to celebrate the events and yet enough privacy’.

  In North Lincolnshire there is an OS square which is all but empty,  In a single corner stretches a few metres of power cables to spoil the virgin whiteness.  Today’s walk is not so blessed with flat calm.  We will see trees.  We will see ups.  Views are compulsory.  Houses aren’t.  Let's talk about Asturias in the years from 718 to 757. In 711 the full force of the Islamic tide swept from North Africa into Visigothic Spain. At the Battle of Guadalete King Roderic and much of the nobility were killed and the Iberian Peninsula collapsed before the all conquering crescent.  The thing is, Asturias is a long way from the main body of Spain.   Pina de Ebro has something for everyone who enjoys the architecture of Spanish pueblos.  It has the tiny lanes, on which houses have been rebuilt for generations without a care for the needs of the modern motorist.  We have the pathways which have been tiled over but once were dirt tracks.  We have the modern suburban developments of low rise houses and 80s hopefully aspiring shacks.  First all, however, we have a park. One thing we noticed, especially with a small boy in tow, was the number of parks with interesting play equipment.  This is because, in Spain, people seem to like children.  This does make them a semi-public property and people feel free to indulge them with sweetmeats and pass comments. ‘I think sucking thumbs makes children look ugly’ said one elderly woman.’ My Spanish for ‘well desiccated prune face, no one asked you’ deserted me.  The play equipment is in the Plaza Pilarin Artigas.  Honestly I’ve looked and was giving u...
