It is another day of alien landscapes only a short drive from a decent cafe doing menu del dia. We are in the shadow of Montana Rajada - with its trails and pumicy landscapes.
Let us occupy ourselves with some Canary Island facts, courtesy of the OEC
The islands export $2.59 billion a year - making it the 16th out of Spain’s regions. The top exports of Canary Islands were Refined Petroleum (€1.31B), Commodities not elsewhere specified (€187M), Coal Tar Oil (€116M), Rolled Tobacco (€95M), and Perfumes (€60.6M).
In 2024, Canary Islands imported $4.48B, making it the 13 largest importer out of the 18 autonomous communities in Spain. The top imports of Canary Islands were Cars (€623M), Refined Petroleum (€512M), Coal Tar Oil (€158M), Planes, Helicopters, and/or Spacecraft (€158M), and Delivery Trucks (€109M)
Trade is growing with the Ukraine, Brazil and Gibraltar and falling with Morocco, Italy and Canada
At last we reach a restaurante - El Portillo. https://menu.grupo7c.es/ It only gets 3.6 stars - which is a bit low. Three weeks ago Luke gave four. He said ‘We stopped of here as a family for a quick light lunch while driving over Teide. There was a small venue but enough choice. The food was reasonably priced and we all enjoyed what we had. The staff were very friendly and the food arrived quickly. We sat outside in the courtyard which has shaded areas and is very peaceful and relaxing. There is also a small shop but we didn't go in. You can also stop off here for ice creams.’
A month ago Careless Angel gave a mere one. ‘First I waited 20 minutes for the waiter to come and give me the menu, then I waited another 20 minutes and got nothing. Thank you, but this is the worst restaurant or bar I've ever been to.’ I can’t help feeling they have lead a sheltered life not to encounter worse.
Overall, recent reviews seem to be more positive. It does seem to get a bit crowded at time. I urge you to go at once and report back the true nature of things.
