The Portuguese are coming!
We are heading away from the bleak magnificence of the road and into the holiday villas and apartments of Los Abrigos and beyond. If you have a moment you may want to go there and update the English wiki page. It says ‘Los Abrigos is a small fishing village in Granadilla de Abona, Tenerife.[1] It has a small harbour, which developers want to expand.’ The Spanish one is much bigger.
Currently the permanent population is about 5000. In the mid nineteenth century it consisted of two single-story buildings, one of which was lived in by six people. Before the tourists the greenhouses came, as did the army during the Second World War.
The most exciting thing that happened in the last 500ish years was the arrival of Ferdinand Magellan, on 1st October 1519. Having called in to Santa Cruz news came a Portuguese squadron was looking for them, Magellan hid here before heading off for America.
Time for a bakery. The Dulce Ban describes itself as artisanal. It opens 8am to 9pm every day but Sunday. Zoltan visited three months ago. ‘I visited this bakery this morning and had a truly wonderful experience. The place itself is cozy and inviting, but what really stood out was the staff member working there — he was the only one on duty, yet incredibly attentive, kind, and welcoming. He handled everything with a smile — serving, managing the counter, and making sure everyone felt taken care of. It’s rare to find such genuine service these days, and it made the whole visit a real pleasure. The baked goods were fresh and delicious, and the atmosphere felt warm and personal. Highly recommended — not just for the pastries, but for the excellent customer experience!
We will have to cut across the beach. Nadia liked it ‘Small black sand beach in the little town of Los Abrigos, surrounded by cute taverns and restaurants with delicious food. Wonderful spot for sunrise, many people jogging or walking early in the morning to take in the fresh morning air and peace. Charming spot for both morning or evening walk, listening to the waves crashing on the rocks.’
Out and up from the waves we will pass a golf course. The vivid green always contrasts with the bleak scrub. Campo de golf del sur has over 1600 reviews and 4.3 stars. I am not sure how to judge a golf course so I will give you Fred’s three stars worth of ‘This links course has great potential, but as of August 2025, holes 10-18 are completely under-maintained and leave much to be desired. Holes 1-9 are very pleasant. At least the club is offering discounts while the course is under construction, which is appreciated.’
We end the day by the Amerilla Golf Academy. It has no reviews. So let us sit here till one turns up.
