South of the Canaries, down Mexico way

A scrubby, sun-dressed landscape.  Why not make a film here?  Well, you want some rugged and bleakness - with a decent bar to had.  Many films have come here for ancient and alien landscapes - or when Mexico isn’t Mexico enough for you.

  • “Wrath of the Titans” (2012) – Bits of the film were shot in Tenerife, showing the volcanic landscapes and rugged coastlines.
  • “One Million Years B.C.” (1966) – Raquel Welch was partially filmed on the beaches of Tenerife.
  • “Rambo: Last Blood” (2019) – While the majority of the film takes place in Mexico, some scenes were shot in Tenerife to depict the Spanish border.
  • “Outcast” (2014)
  • “Jason Bourne” (2016)
  • “Clash of the Titans” (2010)
  • “Fast & Furious 6” (2013) – Well, one of them had to end up here.

We will scrape the edge of El Salto - which sounds like an invented and ironic Spanish sailor’s name for a 1970s kids TV adventure series.  About 750 people live in the municipality, half of whom are in El Salto central.  The place has grown from 220 [91 in El Salto] since 2003.

The Restaurante Mirador del Salto is closed on Wednesday and Thursdays.  Every other day it is a 1-11pm sort of a place [half an hour earlier on both ends on Sundays.  Two days ago Sara said ‘Very good food, high-quality grilled meat, good prices... They gave us dinner even though they were about to close. Thank you very much!’  Three weeks ago Mila felt ‘A lovely restaurant with a beautiful view in the style of a Spanish village. Friendly waiters, quick service, and very delicious food!   You know, Gunnar added the following and I think it is worth the read.  ‘Such a great place for anything from coffee to wood grilled steaks. We just dropped by for coffee and after taking a look at the place we decided to return for dinner. Our steaks and chicken tasted absolutely lovely with the smoky flavor from the wood fire. Absolutely worth the drive.’

We have gone down 107m today - but still have 289 more before we reach the sea.
