Thirty percent cannibalism

Another day in the hills.  We are going to be on CV-752 so that is a bit of a mystery.

Generally, Spain has existed as somewhere for humanity to wander down to during Ice Ages; mooch about a bit and then head north as the reindeer return.  While Blighty has the Happisburgh footprints dating back to 850 - 950,000, Spain has bones.

Atapuerca is in the  province of Burgos.  Bone fragments from around 800,000 years ago, found in its Gran Dolina cavern, provide the oldest known evidence of hominid settlement in Western Europe and of hominid cannibalism anywhere in the world - go us!

The site contains evidence from the Palaeolithic to the Bronze Age.  Digs from 1994 onwards have found over 160 bone fragments of at least eleven hominids were found, between 850,000 and 780,000 years old.. More than 30% of the bones have manipulation marks that suggest cannibalism.

Let us hope there is a café tomorrow.
