The Virgin in a box
We need to talk about Extremadura. It is their day today. They got the day in 1985. 100,000 people turned up in Trujillo to celebrate in 1987. In 1993 they gave up on this kind of thing.
Why the 8th, well, it is all to do with the Virgin of Guadalupe. The Virgin, when not hanging round Walsingham, appeared before Gil Cordero - who was in search of a lost cow. The Virgin showed him where the beast was. Finding it dead, he made the sign of the cross on it and it was resurrected. Inspired by the event, Gil Cordero dug down and found a box with a sculpture of the Virgin in it. An alternative has been suggested. The 25th March marks a Peasant Revolt in 1936. It has its supporters.
