Summer's almost gone

When does summer end?  In many cases about the 5th June but this year I look at it with a new interest.


A friend once commented that the summer ended after main event at Kentwell -in those days last two weeks in June and first in July.  This was her summer hols used up, the solstice had come and gone and that was it.


September is a tricky blighter for anyone teaching.  The solstice has happened and students unlikely to make the grade are sacrificed on the wickerman in the hopes that exam markers will look kindly on the answers of others.  Nothing much has happened by late July, when you crawl over the finish line - wondering if anything you said in the last three weeks will have stuck.  By and large the nights are late and the mornings have lots of surplus daylight sloshing around, more than you would ever need.



Then you have to wake up again as it is September.  At this point you notice the nights are muscling up a bit earlier and morning's lease is far to short a reckoning.  Thing is. Sunrise is 7.25 down here in Spain today the sun will set at 20.38.


Next weekend is Spain's end.  Already the Guardia are preparing for roads full of returnees, casually discarded fag ends, forest blazes and multiple pile ups.


 We were going to visit the Bar Algemesi.  Here is a photo of two chaps there in 2021.  Apparently it is permanently closed.


The Bar Vicent is nearby.  ice2k8 said, three years ago 'Attempted lunch at Bar Vicent, everything was full, we opted for two cuttlefish sandwiches to take away (and after 20 minutes they are still warm). 🚗
As always, at its height, very tender cuttlefish with its mayonnaise and minced garlic and parsley, all just right. The bread, freshly made and crispy. €5.00 per sandwich 👏 The only problem is that they only have cuttlefish sandwiches on Saturdays 🙁

We are warned.

Two months ago Andoni opined 'I went for lunch and it was exquisite, finding it crowded already told me so and I was right.'

Mini Pieces of Supposed tuna

  Pina de Ebro has something for everyone who enjoys the architecture of Spanish pueblos.  It has the tiny lanes, on which houses have been rebuilt for generations without a care for the needs of the modern motorist.  We have the pathways which have been tiled over but once were dirt tracks.  We have the modern suburban developments of low rise houses and 80s hopefully aspiring shacks.  First all, however, we have a park. One thing we noticed, especially with a small boy in tow, was the number of parks with interesting play equipment.  This is because, in Spain, people seem to like children.  This does make them a semi-public property and people feel free to indulge them with sweetmeats and pass comments. ‘I think sucking thumbs makes children look ugly’ said one elderly woman.’ My Spanish for ‘well desiccated prune face, no one asked you’ deserted me.  The play equipment is in the Plaza Pilarin Artigas.  Honestly I’ve looked and was giving u...
