Rocky and Rich - with a hint of orange

We are crossing the countryside.  Irrigation is evident, as are oranges.  Sometimes it gets a bit rocky.   Let's talk food.



Arroz con "Arrós en pilotes".  This is a Christmas Day dish.  Basically do a traditional .Valencian paella then add meatballs.  The meatballs can be of minced pork or beef.


Easter Mona is a sweetmeat for Easter Week.  The first written mention of an Easter mona as such appears in the 15th century , in the book Trobes en lahors de la Verge Maria .It is thought that this name originated in Valencia and Murcia and that its use gradually spread to their neighboring regions.




In the Valencian Community, two types of mona are traditionally made. One is eaten only during the Easter holidays and is a round bun or shaped like a ring, bow, braid, or animal  decorated with one or more hard-boiled eggs with colored shells and coloured aniseed . The other type, also called panquemado , panou , toña or fogaseta , is eaten all year round and is a larger, dome-shaped bun, decorated with granulated sugar.


As we are walking amongst oranges I have recalled when Dad was working out in Valencia he used to bring bags full of oranges home.  Spain is the 3rd biggest exporter of oranges, after Brazil and the US.   South Africa comes fourth

  Pina de Ebro has something for everyone who enjoys the architecture of Spanish pueblos.  It has the tiny lanes, on which houses have been rebuilt for generations without a care for the needs of the modern motorist.  We have the pathways which have been tiled over but once were dirt tracks.  We have the modern suburban developments of low rise houses and 80s hopefully aspiring shacks.  First all, however, we have a park. One thing we noticed, especially with a small boy in tow, was the number of parks with interesting play equipment.  This is because, in Spain, people seem to like children.  This does make them a semi-public property and people feel free to indulge them with sweetmeats and pass comments. ‘I think sucking thumbs makes children look ugly’ said one elderly woman.’ My Spanish for ‘well desiccated prune face, no one asked you’ deserted me.  The play equipment is in the Plaza Pilarin Artigas.  Honestly I’ve looked and was giving u...
