A forsaken lady and dances with heifers

After a day of not much more than a low tech fridge, today, two settlements.

I would like to say Alcudia de Veo is one of those settlements on the only flat land in a range of mountains but that would be stretching the word ‘Flat’ beyond any meaningful usefulness. It crowds around the slopes in a very determined way and so it faces the world.

Alcudia de Veo was a small Moorish hamlet which bided it’s time till the Habsburgs decided to ‘virtue’ signal their piety and expel the 600 inhabitants.   During the 19th century the population bumbled around 500, shot up between 1887 and 1897 - to 859; began a decline after 1930 till it hit the 190s in 1991, where it has remained.

Of the 2229 hectares within the community, only 144 are cultivated  The area abounds in cork oaks, pine and holm oak.  Olives, almond and cherry trees can also be found.  It has been a PSOE place since 1983/  Carmen Alos Herrera was mayor from 1995 to 2015.  We won’t be going into the depths of the village or explore the many places to visit in the hills.  Should you wish to know more here it is https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alcudia_de_Veo   They have a range of Fiestas,in the wider parish.

Saint Anthony’s day . usually celebrated the weekend before Saint Anthony's Day. Held Veo, with a bullfighting parade and animal procession and a bonfire.

Feast of Saint Peter the Martyr. Patron saint of the town. Celebrated on 29th April.  it consists of a pilgrimage to the fountain of the Saint, and food..

Festivities of Christ of Health . Celebrated on 30th April with a procession of the "axes," where the  faithful come to fulfill their "promises" for the healing of some illness.

Festival of Our Lady of the Forsaken . It is celebrated on the second Sunday in May in the district of Benitandús. People from neighboring towns come to celebrate the fiesta and eat paella.

Festivals of Our Lady of the Rosary and Saint Francis Xavier . Summer festivals. During the second week of August, all kinds of summertime festive activities are organized, including dances, heifers, and bullfights.

Saint Michael the Archangel . Patron saint of the parish. Celebrated on 29th September.

Beyond .Alcudia de Veo is Veo.  Another tidied up hillside cling sort of a place.  We will nip into the Bar hogar jubilados. It only opens Saturday and Sunday and Google says it never closes.   It gets 4.7 stars.  Maria said ‘The mojitos are delicious, the atmosphere and the karaoke nights are fun!’   Carmelo felt ‘A little slow, the quality is good and the price in my opinion is a bit expensive, €9.50 for a loin sandwich with peppers and a cremaet.’

So we move on and so we head through the mountains.
