To be honest, I really would like to go there.

On a whim I dived off the road to go into La Puebla de Valverde.  I was rewarded. But first, a flock of sheep.  Followed by a sign saying look out for animals and then some cyclists.

A village!  With places to review!  And a decent bit of old street patterns, old houses and hill top merriment.   Currently 465 people live here.  This is about a quarter of those who lived here in 1930.  The puebla website has some rather splendid photos on it. https://lapuebladevalverde.info/  The town was established as a walled settlement in 1265 as part of the ongoing military border project of Peter II.  It was Pedro that granted the town the right to waters from springs and resulted in a 4km aqueduct to bring it too them.

The town popped up a bit in the various military histories of the region.  Following acts of resistance the Napoleonic French devastated the town. The Carlist was happened and the Valencian Iron Column passed through, establishing medical bases.  The aforementioned website has many photos and, if you are not going to visit in person, I urge you to have a look at it

We will pass under the Portal de Teruel, which Jose says ‘This Portal of Teruel is an entrance door that is part of the urban wall of this beautiful town of La Puebla de Valverde. This town is worth visiting.’  I agree.

Then ti the Taberna de Amparo. It gets 4.3 stars, from over 500 reviews.   Six days ago David reckoned ‘We ordered a menu by phone and when it arrived everything was very well prepared, the spoon dishes were recommended and the beef was good. To return. We were 19 and very good’ Celia added ‘We ate a great menu of the day. Everything super clean and cared for.  The staff is very nice and attentive.’  Pablo, on the other hand, was glum.  He was upset they didn’t have a child’s menu.

So we head out of town and back to the National Road.
