The Lovers' Tomb and other diversions
Plodding along, as you do, aided by streetivew, occasionally you get a moment where you go ‘oh, I get it now’. I now get why Teurel was such a tough nut to crack. Suddenly we see arching footpath/wall ahead and ground fall away and, yes, it is all a bit wow!
If you are into walking down the narrow canyons of four story blocks, today is a day for you. As soon as we cross into the city we will start twisting and turning passed interesting little bars, apartments on the 3rd floor and more monuments than you can shake a more than ample stick.
Let us first linger at the Cathedral of Santa Maria de Mediavilla - sorry, dyslexic thinking slide away, St Mary’s of Maida Vale would have quite a different prospect. In 1171 Alfonso II captured the city and the cathedral was begun. It was of Romanesque design and ended with the construction of a Mudejar tower in 1257. Subsequent developments saw a more Gothic-Mudejar style. The church became a cathedral in 1587. Ten hours ago Monica said ‘A charming cathedral, especially the ceiling, which is a marvel. Admission costs six euros, and it's worth taking a guided tour because you can go up to see the ceiling up close. Our guide, Isabel, also deserves a mention for her dedication, level of detail, and her remarkable knowledge.’
Who amongst us does not like an obscure museum? We the Mausoleo de los Amantes de Teruel goes big on marble tombs. The website has many splendid photos of all the surrounding gloriousnesses https://amantesdeteruel.es/ Really, click on the link and have a look.
Time for a drink. La Barrica gets 4.6 stars from 2000 reviews. Top review term is pinchos - 593 times. Sweet gets 28, celiac 17, chlamys varia 11 and wine glasses the same. Seven hours ago Monica reckoned’ The perfect bar for tapas in Teruel. It's a cozy bar with chairs and tables of different heights. The service is very friendly and offers a wide variety of exquisite tapas. The price per tapa is approximately 2.90.’ Like us, she seems to have nipped into the cathedral first.
Let us stagger on to the other end of town and contemplate the future.
