of medium height and little taste

We are heading towards Alcorisa. It is one of those towns squeezed in amidst the geography.  We are heading in amid the olive trees - a crop which has replaced the old vines and almond trees.

This is another one of those places which only has 2300 people yet seems to be so much bigger a place.  It can tick off the usual Neolithic workshops, Muslim farms and general Medieval stuff.  During the War of the Spanish Succession Pedro Cebrian Ballester supported the Bourbons.  One wonders of this was seal for the French candidate or just upset the neighbours I may never no.  The Carlist Wars wrecked the town and the 1845 Dictionary of Spain, which we have much quoted, said:

on a plain at the foot of two enormous masses of almond stone... It has 400 houses of medium height and little taste in their architecture, of which about 120 are ruined as a result of the civil war... Notwithstanding this, they form a colorful population.’

We are going to wander around the N-211, nipping down to the Calle Mayor and the imaginatively named Bar Calle Mayor.  Open daily, from 9.30 or 10am till 11pm - midnight on Friday and Saturday, it scores 4.6 from 50 reviews.  Seven months ago Manoli said ‘It is a place that is in the center of Alcorisa, the treatment of the owners Yolanda and Javi, very friendly and familiar. And the atmosphere is also very good. The food is very delicious. Star dish, squid in onion and tomato sauce. And the extra large octopus toast.’

On the way out of town is the Bazar China.  For lovers of stuff who can beat a Bazar China.  Once upon a time a young boy could be bought off with the smallest amount of plastic.  The supply of newness was more important than quality.  The Bazar China and its cousins were the providers of this.  Let us gaze at the earthen ware pots and glasses we wouldn’t give house room to.  Shall we buy some plastic flower pots or a housecoat?  Ah the Bazar, provider of all that life could wish.   Eight people rate it as a 4.9 emporium.  Marinela said - in Romanian ‘They are kind, decent prices and all kinds of items.’

With that, we will head out of town.
