A historical hope of the region
It is another day to enjoy the wide, sweeping nature of the landscape. There will be interesting lumps of rock. Olive trees will be in abundance. Occasional ruined buildings will be a thing. On the road, that’s it. Off the road will have two places of note. Not big notes, but note none the less.
Firstly we will go near the abandoned railway station, the Pitarra-Alcorisa. Three people thought it worthy of review. I will quote them all.
Juan, three stars, 5 years ago. ‘A shame of siege, a historical hope of the region, lost.’
Manuel, one star, 5 years ago ‘A ruin, nothing special.’
Enrique, three stars, 5 years ago, ‘Excellent’.
Off the road again to the Yacimiento de la Guardia. This was a long occupied Iberian settlement from the 5th century BC to the 3rd century AD. The centre of the site is located on a flat-topped peak with barely any archaeological remains. The more important remains are on the slopes, where the rooms and the defensive and retaining walls of the Iberian settlement can be found.
A Roman-era thermal bath was discovered in 1983 and may be connected to a villa dating from between the last quarter of the 1st and 3rd centuries AD. Subsequent excavations brought to light various living quarters from the early 4th century AD, with plaster floors, stucco on walls and columns, as well as a complex system of water pipes, possibly related to the thermal baths, in addition to five tombs from a late Roman necropolis.
That’s it for today.
