On to the middle distance

 Welcome to 2112 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=osN-dGs2d2A  That takes me back to the early 80s.  Well, actually we are going into 2012, which is the last time that Streetview went down this plateau. Lets hope it is a nice, warm, Spring day - then this will be pleasant.  If it is raining it might not be as happy.







Not much to talk about.  Let's mention Carmen Valero.


Carmen Valero was born in Castelseras, where we passed through yesterday   Born in 1955, at the age of 12, she participated in the Jean Bouin race, held on the Montjuic hill in Barcelona , ​​under the false name of "Teodora Rodríguez", without having yet obtained an official sports license. After winning back-to-back Spanish Junior Cross Country Championships in 1970 and 1971, Valero won her first three senior titles the following year, taking gold in the cross country and 500 metres races at the Catalan Championships. The same year, she also made her debut at the International Cross Country Championships where she finished 31st out of 44 competitors.


In 1973, Valero won the cross country races at both the Catalan and Spanish Championships, as well as his second consecutive 1500 metres race at the latter event;  later that year, he was awarded Sportsman of the Year by the sports magazine Mundo Deportivo.


In 1974, Valero made her debut at the European Athletics Championships . In 1975, at the age of 19, she won the bronze medal in the senior women's race at the IAAF World Cross Country Championships in RabatThat same year she also finished third in the 1500 metres race at the Mediterranean Games in Algiers . 


In February 1976, Valero won her first gold medal in the senior women's race at the World Cross Country Champion


In 1980, Valero announced her retirement,  following a series of injuries [  and her decision to look after her family, as well as her growing dissatisfaction with the treatment she received from the board of directors of the Royal Spanish Federation – she never managed to become a professional athlete,  as the Federation paid female runners significantly less than their male colleagues. 




Two years later – shortly after the birth of her daughter – she returned to training consistently, and eventually convinced the Federation to allow her to participate in the Spanish Cross Country Championships, where she won the race; .


As a semi-professional, Valero worked part-time at a savings bank in Sabadell. She married José Antonio Mellado, who served as her coach in the later stages of her career; [ the couple had a daughter, Carmen, [ ]​ in 1982. mIn December 1987 he received the Medal of Honor from the International Amateur Athletics Federation .


Following her retirement from athletics, Valero became a member of the executive board of the Royal Spanish Athletics Federation , under the presidency of José María Odriozola, [serving from January 1989 to 1993; She was then appointed vice president and sports director of the CN Sabadell athletics team .


In 1999 he participated in the New York City Marathon , completing it in about three hours and 13 minutes; he then participated in the Madrid Marathon in 2001.

Valero died of complications from a stroke on January 2, 2024, at the age of 68, in Sabadell.
