Fresh Fields and Pastures New
Today is Easter Saturday. Or Bright Saturday. In some ways it is the worst of days. Good Friday has happened and Easter Sunday is tomorrow. I like the imposition of order on the year, beit solar [the solstice] or Religious. Today is a day but the least of days of three. It is a day for decisions. The decision is what to do next.
The original purpose has been achieved. The second ticked off and third a recent memory. There are so many places I would like to see. So, I;m going to see them! We are off for a wander round Spain. We will pop into Portugal. We will end in Andorra. Then I am handing the decision where we go next to you. I realise this is foolish but I am unaware of anywhere called Townie McTownface so I think I am safe. First, we are off to Teruel.
We will bid a fond farewell to the Apartamentos Rurales Mazaleón - where we stayed last night https://mazaleonrural.com/ and turn our thoughts to Mazaleon’s favoured son, Pio Canizar was born in the town on 10th March 1748. He studied in Cretes and then humanities at the college of Alcañiz. He studied philosophy in Daroca 1764 - 1766 and theology 1767 - 1769 . He finished his studies in 1769 and taught rhetoric for 18 years in Alcañiz, Thence he went to Barbastro as a theology reader 1787 - 1790 . In Zaragoza he taught theology 1790 - 1793 . In 1793 he was elected as chronicler of the Zaragoza City Council. He was appointed Rector of Alcañiz ( 1794-1804 ), where he died.
As we are going down the road mostly travelled - apart from a sneak off to a footpath adjacency therein, we might as well gaze on the hill opposite at the Ermita de San Cristóbal Mazaleón. Here is its web presence ‘It is a robust temple built primarily of ashlar. It has a Latin cross floor plan and a sacristy attached to the right side of the chapel, creating a secondary apse. Inside the chapel, the mural paintings that decorate the central dome of the temple stand out. During the Civil War, many of the images, as well as valuable objects that this religious building possessed, were destroyed. However, it does have a main altarpiece built later, which features the image of the saint to whom the temple is dedicated.’ https://caminosnaturales.es/es/red-de-caminos-naturales/poi-detalle/ID.02.44.05.57/b47ec499-062f-40a2-81db-8547bbf6a924
Tomorrow is another day.
