 We are heading out along the lane less travelled and off to Torres de Berrellen.  I may be doing it a disservice but it feels as if it has been left a little away from the motorway and slightly bypassed.  Currently 1500 people live there, up from the 2001 low of 1370 but down from the 1800 of 1960.  https://torresdeberrellen.net/

We are wandering round typical narrow streets and end up at a typical looking Restaurante la Sociedad.  It closes at ten.  Three months ago Seb wrote ‘I had been here before and I can assure you that since they changed management there has been a 180° change!!!

From the moment you walk through the door, this...ehhh Sandra, welcomes you with a smile that makes you happy even on the most "cloudy" day you could have had, one of the happiest people I have ever met!





And suddenly this one appears...ehh Hector, very nice, kind, cordial...and you realize that they make the perfect team, that they enjoy what they do and that they are not there just to work! They really make you feel at home!


If we add to all that that they have stews like my grandmother's...🤤🤤🤤, I guarantee that you won't regret paying them a visit!’

We cross the Rio Porma and into Villarente and Puente Villarente. Cows are important, rain is ubiquitous

  We are descending into the route to the coast. It is the point of all this wandering.  It is a bit British in terms of small lanes and odd turns,  We are on one of many of the camino routes for a bit of this.  We will pass one of the many tiny bus shelters on these lanes. I think I got a clue as to the weather when walking into a cafe in Gijon and noticed an umbrella stand.  Gijon gets 955mm of rain a year.  Santiago gets 1855mm.  London only gets 557mm. We will pass nearby Iglesia de San Juan de Castromaior.   I honour Pablo Pardo Lamela who gives it five stars for the reason ‘ Because I live here’.  The church was built in the 16th century on the site of an old fort. It has an 18th century baroque altarpiece.  We are now in Lugo province.  Apparently these devout Christians remember the Celtic god Lugh in this name. The place has about a third of a million people living here.  The population peaked in 1940 with over 540,000...
