126 inhabitants and 600 souls

This is now a familiar story.  A road, the broad fields of the Ebro valley to the south and west and development nuzzling up to the higher, less profitable land.

After a the usual big white cubes we enter El Pueblo de Alfindén.  The place has 6500 inhabitants who dwell in an area which has grown out of the narrow road which must have been hell to go down at busy times before the bypass.  The mid nineteenth century Geographical-Statistical-Historical Dictionary says of it:

PUEBLA DE ALFINDEN: l. with town hall of the province, Jewish part., aud. terr. and diocese of Zaragoza (2 leg.), cg of Aragon: situated on flat land; it is more frequently hit by winds from the E. and W.; its climate is variable and prone to intermittent storms. It has 140 houses , those of the town hall and prison; a boys' school, attended by 60, endowed with 2,000 rs.; another for girls attended by 17 and 100 rs. of endowment; a parr. church dedicated to Our Lady of the Assumption, and a hermitage (Our Lady of Alfinden) situated a short distance from the town. The term borders on the N. with Villamayor, Perdiguera and Monte Realengo; E. Zaragoza; S. the Ebro r., and W. Alfajarin: in its radius and to the N. there is a mount after. The land is flat and of good quality. Roads : the road from Zaragoza to Barcelona in good condition. The mail is received from that c. by the general driver daily. Prod.: wine, wheat and corn; maintains sheep and horses. Ind.: agricultural, and a flour mill. Pop.: 126 inhabitants, 600 souls.

The town had roughly 1000 people from 1857 to 1910. It really took off after 1991, going from 1500 to the current sprawl, probably because cars have enable commuting and the arrival of new industry.

We will make a single stop, mostly for the name.  The bar, La Marquesina Zona de ocio infantil.   It is LGBTQ+ friendly, is busy mid morning and between 8 and 10 in the evening and Ivan wrote ‘The owner was super friendly, great food and unbeatable service, the children's play area was very clean. Totally recommended’

So we leave the Pueblo and proceed onwards.
