An unexpected closure
We are heading into Tudela and first stop is the Municipal Cemetery. Why, because it has eight reviews and you can beat a reviewed bone yard. In fact, it averages 4, which is better than yesterday’s hospital. It is open from 9 till5 most days but only 9 till 2 on Sundays, Festivals and during July and August. B This issue upset Anna three years a go who wrote ‘Please update the schedule on this website. Yesterday I went with my family from Pamplona to visit the family grave because we saw here that the hours were until 5:00 p.m. When we arrived we found out that the hours in July and August are until 2:00 p.m. At the door we met two other families.’ Other Reviews are less specific.
Tudela has 39,000 residents and a red cross for a flag, making it slightly bigger than Canvey Island slightly smaller than Bury St Edmunds. It draws on the Ebro for many things, including irrigation. We shall see some irrigation channels later. These help it have apple, pear and peach trees, as well as legumes and the like. Everyone was here, Celtiberians, Romans, Visigoths and the like. The place was fortified in 802 by Amrus ben Yusuf, In 806 the place fell un Carolinigan ‘protection.’ The place returned to Muslim rule till 1118, when Alfonso the secured it for the Crown of Aragon.
Tudela was both the birth and death place of Sancho VII of Navarre. Born in 1154 he managed to get to 80, while still doing the general kingly thing of having wars and killing people. He was at the Battle of Las Navas de Tolosa, where a heap of Chrisitian kings defeated troops of the Almohad Caliphate and marked the decline of Muslim Spain.
Lest we think it was all knightly and jolly in 1328 a pogrom was launched against the town Jewish inhabitants.
1808 saw a Battle and true to form, as this was 1808, Marshall Lannes managed to defeat a Spanish Army under General Castanos.
As we are in town lets visit the Pastelria Samanes Gozotegia. 654 reviews leave it at 4,3 stars. Five hours ago [I’m writing this on Christmas Day in an attempt to get ahead so we don’t have the problems encountered in September when life became frantic] Javier wrote You should update the holidays, it is in very bad taste to come from outside to have breakfast and it is closed, putting on the website that it is open’ Yesterday Leticia wrote ‘The hot butter croissant from the griddle is very good.’
We haven’t had a haircut for some while. Peluqueria Bugar gets 4.8 stars. http://www.bugar.es/ Most reviews are unworded. Four years ago Joaquin opined ‘Hello good morning. I give them Five Stars. They are great professionals. The Treatment is Family. I have been a Customer for over 20 years. The place is one of the best in Tudela and Ribera. Taking advantage of this, I congratulated you on Christmas and the New Year 2020. May your Eastern Majesties distribute health, love, joy, peace and gold. Best regards.’
Before we go out into the land of the irrigated fields, we are near the Gaztambide Theatre The theatre dates back to 1936. Alas, the website link does not work so I am not sure what is on at the moment. A week ago Angel reckoned ‘Uncomfortable and poor visibility Maria, on the other hand, said ‘We went to see Dani Martínez and although it was our turn at the top... he was wonderful…’ Others liked its cozy atmosphere.
