Justice and Liberty!
Justice! Justice! Justice! Today is a holiday in Aragon - and we are heading that way so lets know more.
Since the establishment of the Inquisition in 1478 by the Catholic Monarchs , and with the creeping authoritarianism that developed in the government of Philip II, son of Charles I , the Alterations of Teruel and Albarracín occurred due to the constant violations of the laws committed by both the representatives of King Philip II and the inquisitors of Teruel.
The constant disputes and disagreements with the king led to the siege of the city of Teruel by an imperial army under the command of the Duke of Segorbe . Finally, after several days of fighting, the city surrendered on the night of Holy Thursday in 1572, with the leaders of the revolt being executed in the Plaza de San Juan in the following days.
In 1591 Antonio Perez opposed yet more of Royal tyranny. It didn’t end well for him and he was beheaded. Today we remember him and the general ghastly nature of central government incroachments on liberty.
That is today. Now we are going on to Fuenmayor. It is the next town on from Logrono and sits on the Ebro. Celtiberian and Roman remains have been found however the first documentary evidence is in the 11th century. https://www.fuenmayor.org/ Unlike most settlements, Fuenmayor has generally been on the way up. From 1842 to 1900 the populace rose from 2000 to 2350. It fell a bit in the 60s and 70s but now in 3200.
Early into town we come across the Restaurante EL Valenciano. 22 hours ago Aratz said ‘Everything perfect, from the food to the treatment we received. Spectacular food. We will definitely be back!’ Gorka added a month ago ‘We have had 4 diners and the experience has been exceptional. The place is very well maintained, the atmosphere is very calm, the waiter is very helpful and close. As for the food, excellent, fresh and seasonal products and cooked with great care. Impressive desserts. The price appropriate to the quality and level of the restaurant. Thank you!’
We will soon pass through. We are near a bakery on the way out and who can resist a bakery. The Panaderia garrido rios was much loved by Fer Pevi. ‘It is the workshop with the most variety/quality that I have seen. They prepare the dessert you want to order, and if you go without order, they have everything from Cheesecakes, Goshua, Pantxineta, Torrijas, Fritters, Tea Pastries......SPECTACULAR. I will repeat without hesitation’
We continue to wander east and the views continue to be spectacular.
