In the name of liberty
Cenicero does rather sound like a low sugar soft drink. According to wiki it holds the title of a very humanitarian city. About 1200 people live here and why not, you can cross the Ebro here. In 1907, electric lighting was installed in the city, generated by the company Sociedad Anónima Electra de Cenicero. In 1915, the Municipal Hospital was built. In 1916, a telegraph station was installed . In 1951, running water was established for the entire city. All in all, they have advanced confidently into the modern world.
In 1838 the town was sieged for two days. The Carlists, in their struggles against modernity. Attacked the place and murdered members of the Urban Militia whom they captured. Eventually the Carlists gave up as they were afraid of a relief force arriving.
In 1897 it was agreed to erect a monument in memory of the heroes of the town, commissioning a statue of Liberty from Niceto Cárcamo. The city council donated 300 pesetas, and the Militia Society donated the funds it had; the Duke of la Victoria donated 100 pesetas; Sagasti donated 250 and the Marquis of Reinosa donated another 100. On October 27 of that same year, it was placed in the Plaza de Cantabrana (now Plaza del Doctor San Martín), remaining there until 1936, the year in which the Carlists returned to Cenicero and did away with liberty in both terms of statue and legal . In 1976, thanks to the enthusiasm of a group of Cenicero residents, it was reinstated in that same square with a new pedestal, the work of the sculptors Dalmati-Narvaiza. In 1997, the centenary of the Statue of Liberty was celebrated
We actually won’t be going into the town but I thought you might enjoy this.
We are surrounded by vineyards - again. Bodegas Finca Cienvacas-Cenicero Irene was impressed ‘Family winery. We stopped without an appointment and the owner gave us a very pleasant visit explaining the history and processes of making his wines. Without a doubt one of the most unique visits and tastings. Very good quality-price breeding. A good stop if you want to see how a small and passionate Rioja farmer makes wine.’
Let us pause and look at the magnificent views ahead.
