A magnificent time


 
It is St Stephen’s day and time to wonder why a poor man, who lived by a forest, walked three miles to a Royal residence to pick up the odd twig and similar kindling.  It is only a public holiday in Catalonia.   Apparently they observe in the Balearics, which conjures up images of Bird Hides and bobble hats.  Apparently it is It's common for friends and family to join in on a meal to celebrate the day. Typical meals for the feast include a Cannelloni pasta dish, leftovers from Christmas Day, or a pasta and meat meal called Escudella i carn d’olla.




Escudella i carn d’olla. Was first mentioned in the 14th century and comes in two parts.

  • The escudella proper is a soup consisting of a broth with pasta, rice or both.

  • The carn d'olla is all the meat used in the broth, served afterwards in a tray along with the vegetables used.

When both parts are served mixed together, it is called escudella barrejada.










We are going to join the N-232 and wander past Logrono Agoncillo Airport.  The first airfield here was built by the military in 1923.  The military use ended in the 1950s and got a rebuild, like so many, in 2003.  We are not talking a major hub. It can deal with up to 350 passengers at peak times; has a a cafe and a restaurant.  In 2018 21,381 passengers were carried.  A Flight goes to Madrid at 7.30. I can’t find details of the Boxing Day schedule, yet.

Mini Pieces of Supposed tuna

  Pina de Ebro has something for everyone who enjoys the architecture of Spanish pueblos.  It has the tiny lanes, on which houses have been rebuilt for generations without a care for the needs of the modern motorist.  We have the pathways which have been tiled over but once were dirt tracks.  We have the modern suburban developments of low rise houses and 80s hopefully aspiring shacks.  First all, however, we have a park. One thing we noticed, especially with a small boy in tow, was the number of parks with interesting play equipment.  This is because, in Spain, people seem to like children.  This does make them a semi-public property and people feel free to indulge them with sweetmeats and pass comments. ‘I think sucking thumbs makes children look ugly’ said one elderly woman.’ My Spanish for ‘well desiccated prune face, no one asked you’ deserted me.  The play equipment is in the Plaza Pilarin Artigas.  Honestly I’ve looked and was giving u...
