 It is good to be back in familiar territory.  Castile does this.  Long flat stretches of land.  A smattering of carelessly maintained semi industrial businesses.  One or two gleaming new concerns, usually motor-based enterprises and then the five story cannon of a town, broken by the odd older casa and slightly wider space with some tortured trees.  Welcome to Medina de Pomar. 




Spanish towns seem to kick above their weight.  The population is 5900 - it bucks the trends by growing since the 1910s - and has far more businesses than most similar British communities of a similar size. It had a few Royal connections.  Charles I popped in en route from Laredo to his retreat to the Monastery of Yuste.  Queen Regent Maria Cristina granted it the title of city for supporting her during the Third Carlist War. The town was a Popular Party hold since the early 90s but has switched to the PSOE since 2015.

After all this culture we need a meal.  Meson Inesita  It gets 4 stars  A month a go Maria said ‘We usually come to eat and the food is always super good, we ate less cachopo today with drinks and coffee and it was a super good price!! We love coming 🩵’   Fernando added  ‘Quality homemade food, good wines, and the people who served us were friendly and attentive. Good atmosphere.’ Txaro was less happy ‘The bar waiter, Manu?, a professional. What we ordered from pilpil, the cod drowned in oil and the tasteless tripe We will return for the waiter and the wine.;

  Pina de Ebro has something for everyone who enjoys the architecture of Spanish pueblos.  It has the tiny lanes, on which houses have been rebuilt for generations without a care for the needs of the modern motorist.  We have the pathways which have been tiled over but once were dirt tracks.  We have the modern suburban developments of low rise houses and 80s hopefully aspiring shacks.  First all, however, we have a park. One thing we noticed, especially with a small boy in tow, was the number of parks with interesting play equipment.  This is because, in Spain, people seem to like children.  This does make them a semi-public property and people feel free to indulge them with sweetmeats and pass comments. ‘I think sucking thumbs makes children look ugly’ said one elderly woman.’ My Spanish for ‘well desiccated prune face, no one asked you’ deserted me.  The play equipment is in the Plaza Pilarin Artigas.  Honestly I’ve looked and was giving u...
