The town of three lies

 We are off to Santillana del Mar.  For most of its existence it has been more than the place which is by the caves.  It is known by the nickname "the town of the three lies", since according to the popular saying "it is neither holy, nor flat, nor does it have a sea".  Someone on wiki, presumably from the League of Friends, felt the need to add that, although the town has no sea, the municipality does.  




The Abbey of Santa Juliana was the foundation from which the town grew.  It has an awful lot of stone walls and a wide plaza mayor which attracted a market.  Various lords and the like built palaces and it generally bumbled along.  Apparently, well wiki reckons, the 1849 cholera epidemic led to aristocratic holiday making meaning the Castilliams came back.  The population went down from 1842 [2235] fell to 1625, in 1900 but since then has been on the rise, reaching 4236 today.






We may want a rest.  We will pass an apartment in the plaza del rey.  It has three, five star reviews.  A month ago Lucia said ;The apartment was very clean. The beds were very comfortable. Not a detail was missing. We felt like we were at home. The very attentive host left us to have a wide variety of things for breakfast. Highly recommended.’




Swing eastwards again we will pass the Cafeteria Avenida.  It tends to open from 9.30 to 9.30  Jesus was not very forgiving a day ago. He gave one star and said ‘After tasting a portion of the "commercial" Russian salad, we lost our intention of ordering any more dishes.’  Labiciclasica reckoned ;Very good service and high quality food. A place that I always visit when I go to Santillana del Mar. Highly recommended.;  




Out of town we go and we will pass the Campo Municiap de Futbol Carlos Alonso Santillana.   David spoke four days ago ‘Well, I have been enjoying its sports facilities for three years now and I don't know what I could ask for more...   Pina de Ebro has something for everyone who enjoys the architecture of Spanish pueblos.  It has the tiny lanes, on which houses have been rebuilt for generations without a care for the needs of the modern motorist.  We have the pathways which have been tiled over but once were dirt tracks.  We have the modern suburban developments of low rise houses and 80s hopefully aspiring shacks.  First all, however, we have a park. One thing we noticed, especially with a small boy in tow, was the number of parks with interesting play equipment.  This is because, in Spain, people seem to like children.  This does make them a semi-public property and people feel free to indulge them with sweetmeats and pass comments. ‘I think sucking thumbs makes children look ugly’ said one elderly woman.’ My Spanish for ‘well desiccated prune face, no one asked you’ deserted me.  The play equipment is in the Plaza Pilarin Artigas.  Honestly I’ve looked and was giving u...
