It attracts a lot of tourism, especially people who have dogs

San Vicente has developed along its waterfront , which has a long park and a lot of shops.  The Pasteleria Carma is a cake shop in a 4.1 star sort of a way.  Two weeks ago Ivo spoke warmly ‘Super friendly staff, delicious local pastries, good atmosphere and if you need an accommodation, they can provide rooms in Pension Arenal close by.’  A month ago Nestor added ‘Nice place to have breakfast, they have several options on the menu, both sweet and savory, good prices, very good service, very attentive and efficient.’

Fortified with cake let us cross to the Puente de la Maza.  Apparently a wooden bridge was built there in the 6th century   The current one traces its lineage to the 15th century.  Its 28 arches stretch 500m.  Apparently it once collapsed causing long traffic jams.

On the other side of the estuary is a small beach.  Santi perez was not impressed a month ago.  ‘Good for a walk with the dog. To spend a bad day at the beach, it's not a beach, it's an estuary, it's small, it's dirty,... I won't return’  I think blaming the geography for being what it is is a bit harsh.

I’ve got to be honest. I am a bit confused as the same, tiny beach, has three separate listings.  This one, La Maza, has a website ‘https://www.playasparaperros.com/la-maza-playa-perros-san-vicente-la-barquera-cantabria/  It reports it has a drinking fountain for dogs and a capacity of 50 cars   Apparently it has rules - though who enforces them I am unsure.

  • Keep your pet under control.

  • Do not disturb other beach users.

  • Pick up the droppings.

  • The dog must be registered, have a microchip, and have its vaccination card up to date.

  • If the dog is included in the list of  potentially dangerous dog breeds , it must be kept on a leash and muzzled.

Two months ago E Jimenez reported ‘After searching and searching for a beach for dogs, we came here but as soon as we arrived we left, it is not a beach, it is a pond with almost stagnant water, a dirty beach, with glass in the sand and a terrible smell, access is not possible. I see bad if it is true that it is difficult to park, a shame because it attracts a lot of tourism, especially people who have dogs and the town council could get a lot of use out of both the beach and the town, however after seeing the beach I will not even leave. It's an expense here that's a shame, a little more cleaning wouldn't hurt or creating a real beach…’

Oh well.  Up the hill and off the main road, we can enjoy some pleasant views, the odd cow and the possibility of hamlets ahead.
