Reasons to be cheerful

Llanes is a town of about 14000 people. It marks the last port in Asturias, which grew up around a river. The town is documented from the 12th century.  A wall was completed in the 15th century.  By all accounts trading vessels came in from Andaluscia, Portugal, French, Flanders and England.  Tile makers were a thing.  The population peaked in 1920 at 25000.  Many left to Mexico and Venezuela.   The PSOE dominate the council

We are going to snickle through the town.  The port gets 4.5 stars from 5000 reviews.  Tatiana says ‘Llanes is beautiful, it seems like a small capital due to the standard of living, buildings, shops, etc.’

Following the river alng it is time for a meal. The Restaurante Marisquería La Marina comes in at 4 stars.   https://www.villadellanes.com/restaurante-la-marina   A week ago Imane wrote ‘NCREDIBLE!! Fresh wild fishing product, unbeatable quality. The reviews that complain about the price give me the feeling that they have never eaten fresh seafood in their life, they have quite affordable prices considering the quality. If you want to eat from a fish farm, this is not your place. A great atmosphere and the waiters very attentive and pleasant. I recommend that you leave room for dessert, it is very worth it. In short, the best restaurant in Llanes, I will definitely return.’

We are ending the day going out along the harbour wall.  We will pause to see the defences. They have gone for huge concrete blocks. They have painted them.  We need more of this.  The Cubes of memory are not to Jimena’s taste/ ‘Don’t waste your time going there unless you want to enjoy the see views. The “art” installation just looks like a pile of concrete blocks that have been left there and someone spayed the with graffiti.’  There is no pleasing some people.

Tatiana is more impressed. ;It caught us on a rainy and cloudy day and it had a spectacular charm. The cubes look very pretty and attract a lot of attention.I loved looking at each one of them with their different paintings that convey different motifs.’
