‘Good beach, large and wide, with sand and few pebbles and a river mouth

We begin in Berbes. 90 people live here.  It was once a mining town.  Fluorite i with occasional traces of copper was found.  Soon we leave it and we are cutting across country to the Playa de Vega.

It has got to be said that this is the Bay of Biscay we are snuggling up to. Asturias does surf. This beach does surf. Some days it is a pleasant enough, if slightly rocky, place to swim.  Sometimes the Life Guards fly the Red/Yellow flags and the waves gayly toss up mini boulders to swim amongst them is to be battered.  Well, it knocked me over and it was difficult to get up.

Lets do the reviews.  Googles most relevant review says [Hristo] ‘Great surfing spot! Great place for family also! What is special is that there are not many buildings there, you can still feel nature’s presence! Absolutely stunning!!!  Five days ago LCA added ‘Good beach, large and wide, with sand and few pebbles and a river mouth. There are plenty of parking spaces in the area and access is via wooden walkways.

Anna was unhappy.  They didn’t let her dog on the beach.  David didn’t like having to pay 4 euros to park.  Juan was more impressed ‘A very good Asturian beach with white sand and transparent waters. Very close to the village of Alea where there is a restaurant with good quality-price ratio and beautiful landscapes. The village of Alea will see its tourist offer increased with the inauguration of some beautiful apartments (Bosque Alea) with a construction that respects the environment and the ecological wealth of the area.’

As I remember it people took the distant eastern end of the beach to enjoy nature in all its glory without the protection of textiles.

The village is tucked away and just a bit crammed into the nearby sleeps.  It is one of those places where once a fishing village has become a seaside dormitory for communters and holiday makers.  A review of the church reviews the town.

‘Vega has always been a town whose houses have been distributed along the Old Camino, that of Santiago, on its side on the left, is the Chapel of María Magdalena. Belonging to the parish of San Esteban de Leces. It suffered the vandalism of the uncivil war and was rebuilt in 1922, patron saint of Vega whose chapel is under The traditional festivals of this beautiful town are celebrated on July 22, each year with a large influx of public and great animation. A solemn mass takes place in the chapel, with a large attendance of faithful, then the Patron Saint goes out in procession through the village, enlivened by music from the Country.

We will pass an horoyo. It has corn hanging up to dry and so it should.

We are moving out and on to Ribadesella.
