Threading a way among the roads and rail

Another quick retracing of our steps, to cross the road in safety and so head into Gijon by subtle ways.

Gijon is the largest city in Asturias and 15th in Spain.  Let's do some History.  Diverse prehistoric people mooched around here.  The Romans developed the place in the first century. It was briefly the Muslim  capital of the region before they generally felt hanging on to this distant stretch of wet coastland wasn’t half as much fun as invading France and it was left to Alfonso X - in the 12th century - to grant it the status of a puebla. The 14th century wasn’t kind to Gijon, it was burnt down in 1395 and it wasn’t till the 17th century it seems to have begin its rise.  Gijon grew with its port.  The Atlantic trade and then the growth of the Iron and Coal industries enabled the population to rise. It doubled between the 1960s and 80s.

Away from the arterial road, we wind along a lane, passed the Cooperativa de Carniceros [Butchers].  They have two, three year old reviews  Predicador says ‘Very good place to buy items for slaughtering tripe, paprika, meat. And if you don't want it, they will make it for you and smoke it themselves. If you need guidance they will advise you’  Marcelino added ‘Top quality products and very professional and super friendly staff, always with a smile on their faces.’

Under the A-8 we pass by the Campo de La Brana.  They have a football team, CD La Brana - who have a facebook page.  https://www.facebook.com/cdlabrana1957/   The 146 reviews are a bit short of verbage.  Generally the canteen seems good but the place is short of parking places.

Under the Gj-81 and railway we begin to thread our way through the suburbs.  The Parrilla Restaurante is worth five stars, according to Jaime, who wrote yesterday.  He said ‘Wonderful and exquisite food, we were very happy with the excellent service and quality of all the products, 100% recommended.. I will return soon!!!’   A week ago, Maria added ‘We are traveling and we stopped here by chance. For 12 euros we had a great meal. Very correct quality-price ratio. We will return for sure. Very pleasant treatment and fast service.’

We end today near a five star gym.  120 people agree.  The STL Crossfit has a very macho webname.  https://stalliontraining.es/  A Rookie 9 sessions will cost 60 euros.  23 hours ago Meritxell wrote ‘A fantastic site. They have it very well set up with space for a lot of people. You have a feeling of spaciousness and that everything is super organized and well thought out. The coach I had was an excellent person; attentive, kind, with encouraging words when he saw that our strength was failing, and always looking to correct (if necessary). I will repeat!’  The only 4 star review - by Caro - says ‘we were allowed to do a spontaneous drop-in and immediately realized that we were in good hands. very friendly coaches and members.. we almost felt like we were in our own box. next time we're in the area, we'll know where to train 🙌🏽 muchas gracias …

Tomorrow we return to the sea.
