The fairly priced and the divided beach
After the fun of the airport we come to the semi-rural lands to the west of Aviles. The place is crowded with places to stay. The Hotel Rural Marques de la Moral. According to Google the most relevant review was by Roburretto from Valencia. He said ‘We booked the Marqués de la Moral hotel because it was fairly priced in comparison to Cudillero hotel and it was only 10-15 minutes away by car. The hotel has an extensive parking area so no need to worry about it. Rooms were ok and large, but they lacked a fridge. However, the staff were super kind and placed our stuff in the hotel's refrigerators 😃. The surrounding area of the hotel is super nice with great views and lots of trees and flowers. I loved the smell and the peace in the yard in the early morning.Wifi was provided, but a little slow.’
Down the road, by the caravan park the Apartaments Turisticos Marina. Google claims the most relevant review is by Cristina ‘The apartment is located right on the beach with just a 3 min walk. It is a nice and quiet location with a parking space just outside. The rooms were clean and we were provided with towels and small shampoos. There was a fridge-freezer available, as well as a microwave and plates, pots, glasses, etc. We did not have a hairdryer. The only issue was the language and as the apartment is located in a touristic zone, we expected the staff to speak and understand English. One of the ladies at the reception was speaking a little bit of English only. Other than that, staff were very welcoming.’
Jose wrote the most relevant review of the beach. ‘The Santa María del Mar cove is made up of two coves: El Puerto and La Llada. The first of these sandy areas belongs to the town with which it shares the name and which is included within the parish of Santa María del Mar, but the second sandy area, that of La Llada, belongs to the town and parish of Naveces, a nuance that is It has ceased to be emphasized over time, causing the original name of this beach to be lost and assimilated, both by tourists and visitors to the region, the two beaches as one under the name of Santa María del Mar’
We don't actually pass the church of Sata Maria del Mar is worth a quick dash off the straight path. Placido reports ‘This is a pre-Romanesque church that is mentioned for the first time in the year 905 as a donation from Alfonso III and Jimena to San Salvador de Oviedo. It was probably built with donations from local industries in the 9th century, among which could be the salt mines that produced salt for domestic use.’
With that we push on.
