Asturias needs better tourists


Down the road we go; down 148m to 44m above sea level. 




The most exciting thing en route is the Club de Golf Villaviciosa. https://villaviciosagolf.com/   Should you wish 18 holes it will cost you, a non-member, 25 euros - although if you can wait till next week it will only be 20.  The most recent review was by Ivan, two months ago.  He said ‘The treatment and love they give you is impressive, as they take care of the course, the best greens in Asturias.’  Fermin had another joy in mind. ‘My son-in-law took me and we had the vermouth on a terrace from where you could see the entire countryside, spectacular, I will return.’  Esther was not impressed by the restaurant. ‘Fatal!!! We have ordered cachopos and they were inedible. Look, it's difficult to eat badly in Asturias! Not even the potatoes were good!! The bacon combo plate for my son tasted bad. They must have changed owners because I have eaten there in other years and it had been a good experience.’




I was going to do the restaurant separately as it gets its own Google mention.  Generally people love it so I looked for a bad review. I print it mainly for the reply.



Helena said ‘Attentive service and beautiful views, poor quality food and little variety for being in Asturias. Very expensive for what it is. For example, a small frying pan with 4 fried potatoes with very bad oil + 2 eggs and a piece of chorizo...15 euros. The jerky croquettes are delicious. The rest we saw and tried...very bad Furthermore, a very high percentage of the menu is only served between October and May, so if you go outside of that time...it is difficult to select something attractive.

Nice views and place but the food, quality and price that accompanied it was disappointing.’ The reply ‘As it is my last day to say that opinion matters to me the same as what is now coming out of my body....Those who are new tomorrow, let them decide for themselves…’

In which a Roman Bridge and a Funeral Parlour are reviewed.

  We are rising again. We are rising 20 of your earth metres today. We will be 818m above the level sea. We are about at the highest point in the Cheviot Hills. We cross the Rio Porma and into Villarente and Puente Villarente. Coyotuco is back with a five star review: A beautiful BRIDGE with a lot of history but it is not PEDESTRIAN. For pedestrians they have made a PEDESTRIAN WALKWAY right next to it. Cows are important, rain is ubiquitous

  We are descending into the route to the coast. It is the point of all this wandering.  It is a bit British in terms of small lanes and odd turns,  We are on one of many of the camino routes for a bit of this.  We will pass one of the many tiny bus shelters on these lanes. I think I got a clue as to the weather when walking into a cafe in Gijon and noticed an umbrella stand.  Gijon gets 955mm of rain a year.  Santiago gets 1855mm.  London only gets 557mm. We will pass nearby Iglesia de San Juan de Castromaior.   I honour Pablo Pardo Lamela who gives it five stars for the reason ‘ Because I live here’.  The church was built in the 16th century on the site of an old fort. It has an 18th century baroque altarpiece.  We are now in Lugo province.  Apparently these devout Christians remember the Celtic god Lugh in this name. The place has about a third of a million people living here.  The population peaked in 1940 with over 540,000...
