The Prince of Whales
I adore Puerto de Vega. It probably helped that we went there on an azure day, the sun saturating the houses and the water sparkled as the fish glided round the harbour. Lunch was pretty good as well.
The town is a fishing port. It boomed until the end of the 17th century thanks to the 17th century. Throughout the twentieth century ten canneries existed. One of them is now the ethnographic museum. In 1928 fisherman’s warehouse and a fish market.
Gaspar Melchor de Jovellanos is the town’s most famous ex-resident. This enlightenment writer and politician who fell in and out of favour died in 1811 in Puerto de Vega and his home is preserved as a museum. https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gaspar_Melchor_de_Jovellanos
We went to the Restaurante Sidreria Jorge and over 2000 people have reviewed it. https://restaurantejorge.com/ The website has some nice photos on it. Nine months ago Rod wrote ‘My wife and I had a light lunch on a Monday in August, going to Restaurante Jorge in large part because there wasn't much else open. We weren't disappointed. The calamari was delicious, and the ensalada mixta was the best we've had in two weeks in northern Spain with it's generous portion of tuna, white asparagus, and surprisingly mild onion. The Asturian cider was very good and the same price it costs at a nearby Alimerka supermarket. The service was professional. What a great place to have lunch while the rain fell!’ I endorse this message - well, I endorse is about 15 years ago.
We go near the Ethnographic Museum. https://www.naviaturismo.com/museoetnografico If you like boats this is your place. Antonio was ot impressed ‘I found it uninteresting. They need to completely reform and reorganize it. Some of the ship models don't deserve to be in a museum because they are so bad.’ ad Antonio clearly doesn;t understand museum opening times are just the opening of a set of negotiations, not a thing in themselves. Isabel was much happier. ‘A spectacular museum, complete to learn about the history and artisan trades, the whaling past of Puerto De Vega, and thanks to Begoña, the visit was a real joy’
We are on the way out of town and will pass the Church of Saint Maria. https://www.iglesiadeasturias.org/ David reckoned ‘A beautiful church, with a fantastic altarpiece and several altars on the sides of the nave. Eucharistic adoration before the seven o'clock mass. What a privilege to have this in summer!’
With that we leave town and head towards the mountains and the road.
