The less than average Joe and other non-railway stories
We are on the N-632a. It is very old school in the way it follows the contours. Having said that, we are dodging off to go down into the valley and wander amongst the trees.
We are not over burdened with houses or the like and so must comforted ourselves with little economic data. According to the BBVA ‘Asturias' GDP could grow by 2.1% and in 2023 recover the pre-pandemic level. By 2024, the increase in activity will accelerate to 2.5%, and during that year it is expected to be able to recover GDP per capita. If these forecasts are met, Asturias would create more than 16,000 new jobs by 2024.’
The current population of the place is roughly a million, with a population of 95 per km2 - although these are mostly crammed in the central triangle of Aviles, Gijon and Oviedo. As of May 2024 the GDP growth was 3.5%. Unemployment is currently running at 11.6%. Apparently in 2022 the death rate was 13.8% and birth rate 4.7%. The divorce rate was 1.76%.
Enough of this. Let us look ahead and to the north. There is Tablizo train station. It is one of these middle of nowhere places which happened to be somewhere the northern trains happened to stop. Six years ago David gave it 5 stars and no comments. Seven years ago Maneul opted for four, and no reasons. I can find little out and the boys and girls of Streetview didn’t go there. Apparently it is 2 hours 16 mins from Oviedo and a single ticket costs £4-6. Driving would take 46 minutes. Of no help at all is the fact an actress called Claire Tablixo appeared in Pirouette Pour Moi last year and in several of the Teenage Girl franchise. The Day you found me got 7.3 stars. Alas Average Joe got 2.8 amd Teenage Vampire on 3.1.
Tomorrow, more things.
