So many people, so much geography, so little space.
We had to go through Cudilero. Cudilero is a place which is much featured on tourist literature. The reason for this is that the settlement crams in to the tiny roadway which slips down through the crevice that leads to the sea. They have a webcam https://www.webcamsdeasturias.com/asturias/comarca-vaqueira/cudillero/cudillero/plaza-de-la-marina-ayuntamiento/97/
First, some History. The oldest document mentioning Cudillero is from 1285. It was a small fishing point rule by the town of Pravia. It wasn’t until the 20th century the place gained its own council. The populace peaked in 1920, with 12000 people. Where they fitted them all in I don’t know. Today about 5000 people reside. The place has an interesting political history. In 1979 it was split between the Conservative, Far Left and Centrist groupings. Since 1991 the Socialists have been the biggest group [equal in 2015] and today hold 7 seats to the Popuar Party's 4.
We start walking past the modern port. It was constructed to include some of the existing rocky islets. It's both commercial and the home of yachts. We will pass by the Tunel de Cudillero. It is a tunnel, made in 1892, which is 300m long and connects the inland road to the harbour. The path is uneven and slippery. It ooks fun. We didn’t have the time. I must go back.
We are turning the corner into the town itself. It is a marvel. The houses and shops tower over and cram around you. We are in Asturias so e will find several Sidrerias. Lets visit Casa Mari. They are on Facebook. https://www.facebook.com/casamarisidreria/ They get 4.5 stars from over 3000 reviews. 12 hours ago Rodolfo wrote ‘I read the reviews and the truth is that they are totally accurate. It eats very well at a reasonable price. The best thing is that the waitress advised us very well on the quantity, because we would have over-ordered too much.’
This placed is overflowing with the most excellent tourist tat and rubbish - including books on food and folklore. The Tourist Office https://www.turismocudillero.com/ It is pushing an event today. I’ve included a poster.
They some how get a market in here. Lord knows how. I think we bought Mother some knives. We will pass the Speed Queen Laundry service. [Two reviews, Jamie gave it 5 stars, Jose one -’The truth is, I feel a little scammed since it is very expensive and I put the dryer through two times and it continued to come out wet. I think that a third time would have been the same. In short, it happens to get by. I believe it will work with them, no.’]
Shall we stop at the Viriato Efeftos Navales gift shop? Omar thinks so, ‘Excellent store for those of us who have the soul of a sailor. Good quality and design of clothing. Kind and friendly attention from Mr. App, 55 years old, who even found us, an hour later, near the church, to give us the sunglasses that my wife forgot... (grateful)’ Truth is there is so much and we need to push on. We will even ignore the Ferreteria Segio.
As we emerge onto the plateau we begin to get the grand houses of the high and mighty who wanted a coastal place to escape the head of the inland. We end by the IED Selgas secondary school. https://www.institutoselgas.es/index.php?lang=es Two reviews, five stars.
