Just and expensive desserts

 #There is something magnificent about an estuary river which, at high tide, looks deep and strong and at low tide has huge expanses, with sea going vessels crowded round the deeper water.  Welcome to Ribadeo.  


Northern Spain does not provide many easy to harbour spaces and so it was almost inevitable that settlers would settle here.  Iron Agers built a hill fort here. In the 6th century it was part of the exiled Britonia. In the 13th century King Ferdinand III granted the place various privileges - although it was given to French Knight Pierre de Villeines for his part in various Castilian power struggles.






Ribadeo is the home of about 10,000 - it has remained at 9-10,000 since the 1850s. This number doubles during the summer.  While the economy is mostly serviced both it is the most important port and fishing centre between Gijon and Ferrol and if that wasn’t enough to recommend it, it has a Rugby team.





We came here, sallying out of Asturias one summer’s day. Came across the A8 bridge, which gives you a heck of a view and then took a boat round the Ria. Today we will do the slow progress from stretch of commerce, through the canyons of increasing height until we drop down to the docks. Before we head down to the waterside let us have a spot of lunch.  The Pulperia Mar de Rinlo has another website that promises much but delivery is in the future.  They have a Facebook page I am the 7th ‘like’ They have over 2700 Google Reviews.   A week ago Isabella said  ‘Delicious but scarce food In my opinion there are restaurants with better food quite close to this one. Expensive desserts, especially couldan, you buy it at Mercadona or Lidl and it is just as good The best thing about the restaurant was the atmosphere and the attention of the waiters, which was excellent!!!’

  Pina de Ebro has something for everyone who enjoys the architecture of Spanish pueblos.  It has the tiny lanes, on which houses have been rebuilt for generations without a care for the needs of the modern motorist.  We have the pathways which have been tiled over but once were dirt tracks.  We have the modern suburban developments of low rise houses and 80s hopefully aspiring shacks.  First all, however, we have a park. One thing we noticed, especially with a small boy in tow, was the number of parks with interesting play equipment.  This is because, in Spain, people seem to like children.  This does make them a semi-public property and people feel free to indulge them with sweetmeats and pass comments. ‘I think sucking thumbs makes children look ugly’ said one elderly woman.’ My Spanish for ‘well desiccated prune face, no one asked you’ deserted me.  The play equipment is in the Plaza Pilarin Artigas.  Honestly I’ve looked and was giving u...
