Well appointed ‘A’ road happiness,
Let us face it - today is a day of well appointed ‘A’ road happiness, not spoilt by the horrors of small and interesting cafes or unexpected ancient monuments. So, looking around for something to do we may muse over the lake we can see in the distance.
The Puentes de Garcia Rodriguez lakes are roughly 5km by 2km, has a coast of 18km and reaches down 200m. The lake was created by open cast mining wgicbegan in 1976 and saw 261 million tons of lignite - making it Iberia’s largest open cast mine.. After 31 years of operation, it was decided to close the mine on December 31, 2007.
Once the mine was closed, the company Endesa , owner of the mine, suggested to the Galacian government the place be made into a lake. The Eume River was diverted to fill it. This process began in January 2008 and was inaugurated in May 2012 In March 2014, King Juan Carlos presented the IX Prize of the Fund for the Protection of Nature Foundation (Fondena) at the Zarzuela Palace to the president of Endesa, Borja Prado , for the company's work in the restoration of the . the old Puentes mine, which allowed the creation of the lake and a new ecosystem.
AN Island of Memory was created. It appears to have some stone work but was reported as overgrown.
