Owls and their kind
Off we go north. First stop, the Estanco Barroso for all your tobacco needs. The 8 reviews manage two words between them ‘very attentive.’
Onwards to Cerceda. It is a small town of about 5000 people. It has been in decline since 1960, when it peaked at about 8300. The biggest fall was between 1981 [7000] and 2001 [5400]. The town website is a bit sparse on historical detail. It had some Iron Age forts and a gold torque was found - which is currently in the provincial museum in Lugo. It is useful in telling us that the next collection of metallic and bulky items will be in the last Friday of the month. Last month is was put off till 2nd April because of Easter.
Town websites are their own joy. Amongst other things this tells me of their commitment to equality. They also feel Sport is very spiffy. I quote ‘Aside from the undoubted benefits it brings to our health, both physically and psychologically, today the practice of sport also has a relevant social and cultural dimension, transmitter of values and valid as an instrument of education and integration.’ Lastly it mentions the ‘Owl Museum.’ We will get to that later. https://www.cerceda.org/
We are basically following the busy road around the outskirts of the town centre. It has the usual useful things, like hairdressers. I have noticed that reviews in Galicia are mostly just star rating - useless the person is very annoyed, and they get busy. 9 months ago Hallbounty said of Jenny ‘I went to have 1 treatment last Monday, Jeny was nice as always, the woman with the short hair treatment, she was just disrespectful to the clients, very bad experience, I will not repeat it nor do I recommend it.]
We are almost at the end for today but the Museo de Moucho with its own collection needs our attention. The town website says ‘A unique and peculiar museum, opened on December 28, 1994, which pays tribute to a bird traditionally rejected for what it considered to be a bad omen. It consists of a collection of more than five thousand pieces that include sculptures and paintings by Galician artists, books, and even goldsmith's articles, all presided over by a large polychrome stained glass window, the work of Don Xosé Espona. The Museum also has interactive facilities to read, touch and listen to everything related to owls.’ It is open Tuesday to Saturday 10am to 1 pm and 4pm to 7pm.
We will end at JB - a cafe open 6am to 2am weekdays, 7-2 at weekends. Lets end on a high. About a month ago Juan wrote ‘It has very long hours and is well located in the center of town. The coffee is very good, the pastries to accompany it are also very extensive. At mid-morning with the drinks they put a skewer that matches the menu of the day, very fresh and freshly made. The prices are adjusted. The staff is very friendly’
